T.R. Knight played the role of the lovable doctor George O’Malley on Grey’s Anatomy for the first five seasons. He was there from the very first episode and his character gradually grew from an underconfident intern to a successful and capable doctor over the course of five seasons.
However, as reported by Entertainment Weekly, at one point, Knight felt that there was a
“breakdown of communication”
between him and Shonda Rhimes, the series creator and that his character was not getting the screen time that he should. This led him to leave the show after season 5 when he was killed off in an accident while trying to save a woman.
Despite leaving the show as a dead character in Grey’s Anatomy Season 5, George did make a comeback in the 17th season as a guest star, as Meredith saw him in her Covid-induced dream. George’s role brought Knight a lot of appreciation, including a nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series at the 59th Primetime Emmy Awards.
