Escape at Dannemora is a limited series that was initially released on Showtime back in 2018. The show has recently been added to Netflix and audiences all across the world are impressed by the gritty and reality tone of the show.

The Ben Stiller led production chronicles the daring and ambitious prison escape at Dannemora in Upstate New York by two convicted felons acting in consort with the prison's tailer shop employee.

Escape at Dannemora boasts a textured storytelling that presents a true story that went down in 2015 without any embellishments. A driving force behind the realism of the show is Ben Stiller's decision to film the scenes on location at the actual Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, where the actual convicts lived.

Apart from this, certain scenes were also shot in a warehouse in Brooklyn, and a decommissioned prison in Pittsburgh, apart from being filmed inside a studio.

The real-life prison break was committed in 2015 by two convicted felons going by the names David Sweat and Richard Matt, who were aided in their efforts by Joyce 'Tilly' Mitchell, the prison's tailor shop supervisor and Gene Palmer, a prison guard.

Their escape then leads to a multi-million dollar manhunt which stretches over several weeks, until Sweat was shot and killed and Matt was apprehended and sent back to prison.

Here's everything we know about the shooting locations of Escape at Dannemora.

1) Clinton Correctional Facility, New York

Ever since he first signed on to the project, Ben Stiller insisted upon shooting at real locations for the show. This involved a lengthy process of seeking permission from the competent prison authorities. He wanted the prison premises to contribute to the story in an important capacity.

The Clinton Correctional Facility is arguably the largest maximum security prison in New York and holds a total of two thousand and five hundred male inmates. It comes under the purview of the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision, who at first weren't too keen to grant permission to the shooting crew.

Stiller wanted the eight-part series to have key scenes that would be shot within the prison walls at the North Yard where the culprits are believed to have devised their plans, as well as the surroundings of the prison which are surrounded by a massive thirty foot concrete wall that stretches for miles and is reinforced by guard towers at short distances.

Eventually, by calling up a guy who knew a guy, Stiller was able to obtain the permission of Governor Andrew Cuomo to shoot inside the prison facility.

2) Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Apart from shooting inside Clinton Correctional Facility, the crew of the show had to film other key scenes inside a decomissioned prison located at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

This was done so that they could maneuver at their ease and shoot such important scenes that were otherwise impossible to shoot at Dannemora.

3) Brooklyn, New York

As mentioned earlier, the prison's tailor shop employee was a key conspirator in the escape plot for Escape at Dannemora.

Therefore, a warehouse in Brooklyn was refashioned and redesigned by the production team to look like the prison's tailor shop where much of the planning was devised by the inmates.
