Creature Commandos is the latest show in James Gunn's DC Universe, which he is trying to build into an equivalent to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
While it is easy for the MCU to streamline its superheroes under a single umbrella as all of them are based in New York and created around the same time by the same artists, it is difficult for DC to do the same because of its diversity.
However, James Gunn and producer Peter Safran have taken a project under his wing to create an interconnected fictionalized universe that justifies its strangeness and diversity.
The upcoming Creature Commandos will have a separate tone within the DCU and it will follow a different approach than DC's previous shows. This will mark a new era for DCU shows following Peacemaker.
It seems to be another step in realizing this vision. This article will explore James Gunn's vision and how Creature Commandos fits into the DC universe.
How does Creature Commandos fit in the DCU?
James Gunn recently told Entertainment Weekly about the new DCU, which will embrace its diversity in every form. He said,
“It was different from Marvel in that way. That’s something that I really want to retain within the studio, that every project is going to bring a different vision by the artists who are creating it.”
Gunn further discussed a subgenre within DC comics that is not mainstream but is important to the franchise as a whole.
“The thing I've always loved about DC Comics was that you had your mainstream comics that always ran, but they also had these tonally different comics like Watchmen and The Dark Knight Returns and All-Star Superman,”
What will DCU's Creature Commandos be about?
The upcoming show will be an adult animated series following the spiky stories of monstrous characters wrestling with their past lives. This seven-episodic show will feature a different character's back story in each episode, recounting how they ended up in their current situations.
“I'm used to dealing with oddballs and irregular types and weirdos,”
Gunn stated and, he also added that,
“That's what Guardians is, and Creature Commandos is kind of like Guardians without the sentimentality. The Guardians are all really good characters at their heart, and that just isn't necessarily the case with the creatures.”
Gunn also hinted that the series would be a fun distraction from the canonical Superman saga and is the beginning of a fun DC journey, hinting at other 'DC stuff.'
What characters will be featured in Creatures Commandos?
As the name suggests, the show will focus on the backstories of a particular character in every episode. Here is a list of characters and who will voice them in the series:
- Frankenstein (David Harbour)
- Bride of Frankenstein (Indira Varma)
- Doctor Phosphorous (Alan Tudyk)
- Nina Mazursky (Zoe Chao)
- Weasel and G.I. Robot (both Sean Gunn)
- Amanda Waller (Viola Davis)
- Rick Flag, Sr. (Frank Grillo)
While some characters like Frankenstein are familiar to the audience, Gunn reveals that Mary Shelley's novel of the same name was his inspiration for the character.
The show will also feature less-familiar faces like the G.I. Robot, which will recount his sad history from World War II. He only felt at ease with the other soldiers in the DC's 'alternate history of World War II'.
Creature Commandos will premiere on December 5, 2024, on Max.
