According to reports by Redanian Intelligence, House of the Dragon will start filming season 3 between March to October 2025. Even that is not fully confirmed however, the source stands credible. Its season 2 was shot from April 2023 to September (5 months) end of the same year and it is speculated that it's season 3 can take even longer.

Indeed, house of the Dragon will continue to shoot in historic and stunning locations across Europe just like its previous episodes. Some locations might be the same for season 3 like the tall castle of ancestral seat of House Velaryon. It was shot on an island in Driftmark, St. Michael's Mount, Cornwall. The Plaza Mayor in Spain could be another location that set up the main backdrop for King's Landing.

Why season 3 of House of the Dragons comes with an extended schedule?

The reason behind the show's extended schedule could be its extra number of episodes than usual. The first season had 10 episodes, while season 2 had 8 episodes.

Season 1 was shot from March 2021 to February 2022, almost 11 months the team was on the floor. Even season 2 was planned with more episodes but as showrunner Ryan Condal explains there were a "host of factors that went into that decision," and the numbers were reduced.

"It's a big, ambitious show, and it can become unwieldy in terms of the number of shoot days [you have], and certainly the the amount of resources that you have to make it...[T]here was a bit of a rebalancing of the narrative that was necessary to happen. This eight-episode cadence helped us to find that."

Therefore there could be other factors behind the extended schedule of season 3 as well that only the makers know. They are dealing with complex action-heavy scenes this time like the Battle of the Gullet, a significant naval confrontation during the Dance of the Dragons.

Therefore it will require extensive visual effects to depict the naval army with the aftermath of the attack and the devastation to be shown. This makes it a heavy CGI scene as well. Depicting dragons fighting against naval warfare is a historical fantasy that needs to be created with utmost care for it to seem realistic.
