Netflix has expanded The Witcher Universe to the animated realm with the latest addition to the franchise. The next entry in this dark fantasy franchise is an animated film which is titled The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep.
The events that play out throughout the runtime of the movie have a short time frame. Chronologically, the movie takes place between the first season's Episodes 5 and 6.
This animated film has a unique inspiration, a short story written by the writer of The Witcher books Andrzej Sapkowski named "A Little Sacrifice". "A Little Sacrifice" (or the original Polish title Trochę poświęcenia) is a love story that almost dooms a princedom.
The rest of the story follows Geralt trying hard to thwart the princedom's downfall.
What is The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep about?
Looks like the animated The Witcher movie will closely follow the plot of Sapkowski's Trochę poświęcenia. In The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep trailer, we see The Witcher getting involved in a conflict between merpeople and humans that dates back centuries.
However, hope arises on both sides as Duke Agloval falls in love with the mermaid Sh'eenaz. Some issues need to be ironed out though.
The Duke wants the mermaid to transform herself into a human, and Sh'eenaz wants the Duke to transform into a merman. Despite Geralt's best efforts, both parties refuse to budge on the issue, and the conflict resumes.
Will Geralt be able to convince both parties to stop their war? Find out by watching The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep on Netflix in February.
Who are the talents involved in Sirens of the Deep?
Rae Benjamin and Mike Ostrowski, the writers in The Witchers series wrote the movie. Showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich serves as the producer and Andrzej Sapkowski is a creative consultant. It is directed by Kang Hei Chul, a storyboard artist on The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf.
Studio MIR, the South Korean animation studio, that also worked on Nightmare of the Wolf, returns for Sirens of the Deep too. The animation studio's other notable works include Voltron: Legendary Defender and The Legend of Korra.
Is Liam Hemsworth Geralt?
As The Witcher fans know Superman actor Henry Cavill portrayed the role of Geralt until the third season. He was replaced by Liam Hemsworth, who was known for playing Gale Hawthorne in The Hunger Games movies.
So, some thought that Sirens of the Deep will be Hemsworth's debut as Geralt. However, that's not the case.
Who stars in the new The Witcher movie?
It was revealed that Geralt will be voiced by Doug Cockle in the animated movie. In an interview with Netflix, this is what Doug said:
“I am super excited to announce my return to the world of The Witcher voicing Geralt of Rivia once again. I’m thrilled to be able to share this next chapter of the White Wolf’s journey with fans of the Witcher universe. Mire taedh aen stráede!”
Cockle will be joined by another newcomer to The Witcher world, Christina Wren's Essi Daven. However, they'll be joined by other franchise alumni like Anya Chalotra's Yennefer of Vengerberg and Joey Batey's Jaskier.
The animated The Witcher movie will premiere on February 11, 2025, on Netflix. The next entry after The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep will probably be the fourth season, in which we will see Liam Hemsworth as Geralt of Rivia.
