The procedural series NCIS is gearing up for a return later this year after a bombshell Season 21. Since airing in 2003, the cop drama has kept viewers hooked on the action, suspense, and overall thrill in each episode.

NCIS follows the story of a group of fictional special agents working for the Naval Criminal Investigative Service or NCIS, which is a crime-solving faction primarily focused on marines and navel officers gone rogue.

Season 21 saw perhaps one of the most bizarre murder cases of a dedicated Navy Pilot, giving serious E.T. vibes. However, behind the misleading assumption was something far more sinister.

Similarly, the team investigates some pretty enigmatic cases including hunting a serial killer and the demise of a heart surgeon. Season 21 ended on a cliffhanger with Vance bagging the job as Chief for training at REACT - which was his dream come true.

Since then, fans have eagerly been waiting for Season 22, especially since production had been put on hold until the Writers Guild Strike, which concluded in 2023. As mentioned earlier, the wait is almost over, and it is time to take a look at everything to know about the upcoming Season 22 release, the plot, cast, trailer and spin-offs of NCIS.

When will Season 22 of NCIS release?

NCIS Season 22 is slated to be released later this month on October 14, 2024. The series will premiere with episode 1 on the aforementioned date at 8:00 PM Eastern Time on Netflix.

Following the premiere, further episodes will air every week on Monday at 9:00 PM Eastern Time starting October 21. Per reports, the procedural drama is set for 22 episodes each lasting nearly an hour. The show is set to conclude sometime in August 2025.

The new Season has seemingly returned to the usual episode list in comparison to the mere 10 episodes from Season 21. This was primarily due to the previously mentioned writers' strike, which caused a massive delay in production.

What is the plot for Season 22 of NCIS?

Season 22 of NCIS will deal with the aftermath of Knight’s decision to either leave or stay with her home team. As mentioned, after concluding a mind-bending case and narrowly escaping death, Knight discloses her offer to Vance and the rest of the team. However, her choice wasn’t explored since the episode concluded on a monster of a cliffhanger.

The new season will finally unveil the decision she took and perhaps even explore the possibility of someone else replacing her. Moreover, NCIS Season 22 will also revolve around finding a mole in the organization, who is supposed to be working dangerously close with and revealing the organisation's secrets to criminal parties.

In this case, everyone is a suspect and there are lives are at risk. With the very reputation of NCIS and the safety of civilians at stake, each character in the show will embark on one of their most nerve-wracking mysteries yet.

Who is in the cast for Season 22 of NCIS?

Several of the original cast members from Season 21 will reprise their roles in the upcoming procedural drama. While Knight’s return remains strictly under wraps, Alden Parker (played by Gary Cole) will make a return to NCIS per multiple reports. Cole last made an appearance in Season 19 of the hit series.

Here’s a complete cast and character list that has been released for Season 22 and is subject to more additions:

Is there a trailer for Season 22 of NCIS?

Yes, there is a brand new trailer for Season 22 of NCIS. CBS dropped a first look into the upcoming drama and mind you, it’s electrifying! At the beginning of the trailer, we see Vance on a dinner date with an unidentified woman before it makes the switch to Cole’s character, thus revealing the primary plot: A mole exists within the NCIS.

The trailer further progresses to the point where the entire NCIS team is on edge and closing into different places being led to a string of bodies or an empty warehouse. It then transitions to Vance and Parker having a heated discussion about concealing an anonymous (for now) person’s whereabouts.

As the trailer moves ahead, we see multiple climaxes to chases, sleuthing, gun fights, punches, and a lot more! The trailer leaves fans of the show with plenty of room for speculation about the mole’s identity, with Parker being untrusting and suspicious of every single person that is on his team. The trailer concludes with Parker and Vance (whose shirt had stains of someone else’s blood) sharing a moment of sarcastic banter about “feeling good that morning.”

How many spin-offs does NCIS have?

The NCIS universe has expanded quite a lot over the years and has as many as five spin-offs, all of which were quite successful. Here’s a list of the spin-off series and the number of years they ran for:

  1. NCIS: Los Angeles - runtime of 2009 to 2023
  2. NCIS: New Orleans - runtime of 2014 to 2021
  3. NCIS: Hawai’i - runtime of 2021 to 2024

Apart from these three, two brand new spin-offs - NCIS: Sydney & NCIS: Origins were announced and later released in 2023. Earlier this year, broadcasting giants CBS made a joint announcement for both, the Season 22 and the ongoing spin-off.

As per reports, NCIS: Sydney is confirmed to return for Season 2. However, the fate of another NCIS spin-off, that is Season 4 of NCIS: Hawai remains undisclosed, undecided and under wraps at the moment.

Until the much awaited arrival of Season 22, you and fans around the world can catch-up and easily binge all of the previous seasons of NCIS on Netflix. If you've never seen the show, this is the right time to begin!
