Dune: Prophecy has been given its release date. The series will premiere on HBO on Sunday, 17 November at 9 p.m. There will be six episodes, all of which will be released on Sundays.

Dune: Prophecy is a prequel to Denis Villeneuve's Dune films, taking place more than 10,000 years before the events of Dune. It tells the origin story of the Bene Gesserit, a secret order of powerful witches who influence the politics of the sci-fi world behind the scenes.

As the new face of the modern Dune franchise, you might wonder if Timothée Chalamet will appear in the new series. Timothée Chalamet already portrayed the character of Paul Atreides in Denis Villeneuve's Dune: Part One and Dune: Part Two and would do so again in Dune 3. Timothée Chalamet's Paul Atreides will not appear in the upcoming series of Dune: Prophecy.

What is Dune: Prophecy about?

Dune: Prophecy is the television adaptation of Sisterhood of Dune, a novel published in 2012 by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson. As both authors are still involved as executive producers, the story will probably follow that of their novel Sisterhood of Dune, which is the fourth novel in the Dune series.

The events in the series will take place 10,000 years before the film and the original novel by Frank Herbert. As such, we will not see Chalamet or any of the other characters from the movie in the new series.

The new series will focus on the formation, establishment, and influence of the Bene Gesserit. It will explore its origins in more mysterious and darker aspects of the Dune universe, which will form part of the prophecy in Dune: Part One and Dune: Part Two.

The series will also explore the connection between the Harkonnen and the Bene Gesserit, as two of the main cast members, Emily Watson and Olivia Williams, belong to both groups. It will show how Bene Gesserit initiated the events that led to Paul's rise in Dune.

Why is Paul Atreides not a part of Dune: Prophecy?

The upcoming series is, by almost all accounts, a prequel, taking place thousands of years before the events of the two previous films and at a time when the Empire was still in its infancy, still being rebuilt. Arrakis plays a much less significant role in this series than in the two films. Schapker explained

“I would say that Arrakis is present in our story, but from a distance. We're exploring other planets. And our story primarily takes place on Salusa Secundus, which is a very different planet than it is in the films.”

Though the show might incorporate some aspects of the movies, it will surely focus on a completely different timeline—a timeline where Paul Atreides didn’t exist. Therefore, having him in the series makes no logic.

The new series will be available to stream on HBO Max once released.
