A Netflix spy thriller, Black Doves was released on 5 December 2024. The six-episode-long series is set during Christmas and is about an undercover spy named Helen who is married to the UK's Secretary of Defense.
Helen works for a private spy company called The Black Doves and reports information regarding her husband's work to her employer. Things take a turn for the worse when Helen's lover is murdered.
She soon realizes that her secret identity as a Black Dove has been compromised. In order to keep her cover intact, her agency sends in her old friend, Sam. Keira Knightley, Sarah Lancashire, and Ben Whishaw play the role of leading characters in the series.
Before Black Doves hit viewers' screens, Netflix confirmed Black Doves would return for a second season. While there is still no confirmed date for the release of season 2, audiences can expect the second season of Black Doves to be released in early 2026.
When will Black Doves season 2 be released?
It is still unclear when season 2 of Black Doves will be released, but Joe Barton, who serves as the creator of the show, has revealed details about the release timeline and plot of season 2.
While talking to The Hollywood Reporter, Barton confirmed filming for season 2 will begin in 2025. He assured viewers that audiences will not have to wait a long time for season 2. He stated,
"Literally, I'm in the writers' room right now. We have just finished a meeting. We're figuring it all out and putting it all down on paper. But yeah, next year, so hopefully, it won't be too long a wait between series for people. That's where we're at."
While talking about whether the second season will also be centered around the holidays, Barton confirmed that season 2 will not be out by December 2025. Keeping this in mind, it is safe to assume that the earliest audiences can expect to see season 2 is early 2026.
What can viewers expect from Black Doves season 2?
If you have watched season 1, you know that season 2 might delve further into Helen's secret. Audiences can also expect to find out what happens to Sam, as season 1 saw Sam work for the man he was supposed to murder years ago.
In the interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Barton gave many hints regarding the plot of season 2. He further spoke about how it is highly unlikely that season two's plot will happen during Christmas. He stated,
"If it was down to me, I'd probably set everything at Christmas. I just like writing about it. But no, I think mostly because of schedules and release, to have something ready for next Christmas would be impossible. And then you'd be in a situation where we'd have to make people wait two years for the Christmas after that, which should just be too long. So I think inevitably it's not going to be a Christmas show, But it'll be interesting to see them out of their winter coats."
For those wondering if any new antagonists will be added in the second season, Barton added that Helen may just have to fight another villain. Referring to Tracey Ullman's cameo in season 1, Barton added,
"Well, one of the things I felt watching the first series was that Sam and Helen, they don't really have a Moriarty. They don't have the big bad. Tracey Ullman comes in and there's a great scene in that, but she only comes in at the end and there's a reveal, and then she's gone. One of the things I think would be really fun to do is actually to give them a proper onscreen antagonist, a proper villain for them to have to deal with. So that's big on my list of thing for series two."
He further added,
"Man, I don't know. It's too early to say, because I don't even know exactly the age or even gender of the villain. We're still playing around with it. What's been amazing about series one is getting all these incredible actors together. So we do feel quite excited about who we can add to the group. Some names have been flying around. I've got one idea, but we'll see."
For audiences who are hoping to see more of Sarah Lancashire as Reed in the series, Barton revealed some details about the character's fate in season 2. He stated that season 2 will delve further into Reed as a leading character. He stated,
"I do and I've been thinking about it a lot for series two. I've written some stuff. I couldn't really give it away, but I love that character. And having Sarah come in and do it is amazing. And actually having someone like Sarah come in and do that, you want to know more, because it's Sarah Lancashire playing the part. Yes, I would like to delve more into her backstory and who she is, but that would be definitely something for series two."
