Where Alien: Romulus fits in

Romulus is set around 20 years after the original film (2122) and reveals that the iconic Xenomorph from the Nostromo, nicknamed "Big Chap," actually survived being ejected into space by Ellen Ripley.

The main story of Romulus follows Rain Carradine (Cailee Spaeny) and her android brother Andy (David Jonsson), part of a group of space colonists seeking to escape the oppressive Weyland-Yutani-controlled Jackson's Star mining settlement.

The black goo from Prometheus reappears as a crucial plot point in Romulus. The scientists onboard the Romulus research station extract this goo from the Xenomorph, hoping to transform it into a "miracle cure" for upgrading humans, but the experiment goes catastrophically wrong.

This black goo is the same mutagen that android David (Michael Fassbender) experiments with to create the Xenomorph species in Covenant.

Similar to previous films, Romulus focuses on the horrifying consequences of tampering with Xenomorph biology. The Romulus station turns into a Xenomorph hive, and a grotesque hybrid creature emerges after Rain's friend Kay uses the black goo in an attempt to heal herself, only to suffer a terrifying mutation.
