Dark Winds Season 3 has premiered on AMC, bringing the audience back into the world of the Navajo Tribal Police officers. The new season takes no time in setting an intense tone by introducing the legend of Ye’iitsoh.
The first episode of the season is titled Ye’iitsoh, which means Big Monster. As the name suggests, Ye’iitsoh is a giant monster as per Navajo legend, and is considered one of the most fearsome creatures in Native American folklore.
In Dark Winds Season 3, Ye’iitsoh is a physical being, who lurks in the desert. The monster is even able to terrify Joe Leaphorn, who is otherwise known for his calm and composed personality.
Dark Winds Season 3 Episode 1 introduces Ye'iitsoh in the narrative
In Dark Winds Season 3 Episode 1, Ye’iitsoh adds to the narrative's mystery. The season starts with Joe Leaphorn facing the terrifying threat in the desert. He gets so scared that he barely manages to call for help, which hints that Ye’iitsoh is not a regular creature.
People describe the creature as tall and thin, with ragged clothes and strange, inhuman features. It seems to have an eerie connection to the desert.
Meanwhile, a 14-year-old kid named Ernesto Cata goes missing in the town. His disappearance brings back old legends, and people start talking about Ye’iitsoh. Some think of it as yet another mythical story, but others believe a far more sinister force is behind the kidnapping.
At the crime scene, there is a bicycle with blood and an arrowhead stuck in a dead man’s mouth. As Leaphorn starts to investigate the case along with Jim Chee, he realizes that he is not just dealing with a creature but also with the ghosts of their pasts.
It is possible that Ye’iitsoh could represent Leaphorn’s inner demons and traumas, while a criminal takes advantage of the legend to instill fear in the town. The future episodes of Dark Winds Season 3 might delve more into Ye’iitsoh’s legend and reveal how it ties into the disappearance case.
Ye'iitsoh in Navajo folklore
The Dark Winds Season 3 storyline draws inspiration from the Native American folklore of Ye'iitsoh. As per a Navajo legend, Ye’iitsoh was a monstrous being from the early days of the world, who was infamous for attacking and eating humans.
He killed so many people that the survival of the Navajo nearly came to an end. For a long time, no one believed he could be defeated. As per the legend, this changed with the birth of twin brothers, Naayee’Neizghani (Monster Slayer) and Na’idigishi (He Who Cuts Life Out of the Enemy).
Born to Changing Woman and the Sun, the twins were destined to rid the world of monsters. In their journey to meet their father, the Sun, the twins went through some dangerous trials and earned powerful gifts by proving their worth every time.
The final battle against Ye’iitsoh took place at a spring where the giant came to drink. The twins hid until the right moment and then stepped forward and taunted him before attacking. Ye’iitsoh fought back with full strength, but the twins used their divine weapons to strike Ye’iitsoh multiple times until he finally fell.
Over time, the legend of Ye’iitsoh changed. Some now describe him as a Sasquatch-like creature, a tall and mysterious being. In this version of the legend, he is not a threat but a secretive figure who coexists with the Navajo people.
