Virgin River season 6 came to an appreciative conclusion recently on Netflix. Virgin River star Annette O'Toole, who plays Hope McCrea, recently spoke at length about her character and the show in an interview with Parade. She hinted that an important backstory of her character might be on the cards for the upcoming season seven, which has already been greenlit by Netflix.
The character of Hope McCrea is pivotal and central to the narrative of Virgin River, especially because Hope is the mayor of Virgin River, and, thereafter, it is her job to keep up appearances with everyone. As Annette O'Toole has been playing the character for quite some time now, six seasons to be precise, it is natural that she has gathered several insights about the character that are otherwise difficult to comprehend. Thereafter, she emphasized that appearances may be deceptive or one-sided in the case of Hope. She stated:
"People like to put labels on her, especially at first. She's this or that or nosy. I hate her, go away. People are who they are for a reason. As the seasons have gone on, we've seen some of why she is the way she is and what her life has been like. That's what I like about her. She's kind of this continually unfolding origami gift."
Here's everything we know.
Virgin River star Annette O'Toole opens up about her character Hope McCrea
Throughout the recently concluded sixth season of Virgin River, Hope tries her best to gather her town around the impending wedding between Jack and Mel. As the wedding ceremony itself proved to be grand and much-anticipated, Hope ran into certain memory lanes and resuscitated a few memories in the process. She said:
"In this season, we find out about an ex-husband of hers and what that relationship was like. You see how that probably affected her, she married him very, very young, and he was so domineering that now she may go overboard with being in control of things. She has to be in control because she wasn't in control for so long."
Annette O'Toole also took the opportunity to highlight her incredible working chemistry with co-star Tim Matheson, who plays the character of Doc on Virgin River. Doc and Hope once again found solace in each other during the show's fifth season, and as Annette suggested, the two are currently undergoing the honeymoon phase of their relationship. She revealed:
"Tim and I work on scenes together because there's not a lot of time to do it on set. We usually go over things. We either get together or we do it over the phone and make sure we know where we're coming from and where we're going, and how this might reverberate in the future. That's really fun."
Annette O'Toole expresses gratitude for her acting career
Annette has been working as an actor for quite some time now, having made her first screen appearance back in 1967, and yet chose to elect Virgin River as one of her most successful projects when she said:
"It's kind of amazing. I've been doing this for a long time. I've done some things that were successful, but nothing like this. This is kind of a global phenomenon that nobody saw coming. It's lovely. It's really wonderful."
She also added:
"I have enjoyed every single job I've ever done, even the really hard ones. I've had a couple of unpleasant situations, but I learned from them," she said. When asked if there was anything she'd like to tell a young Annette just starting out in the business, O'Toole said she wouldn't change anything in her career."
Virgin River is available exclusively on Netflix.
