Agatha All Along is being praised as one of the best series from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, thanks to its intriguing storyline and various twists and turns. The show starts with a powerless Agatha Harkness forming a coven to walk down the Witches’ Road to reclaim her magical abilities.
The road is said to be a magical pathway that could grant any witch’s deepest wish if they can survive its tough challenges. On her journey, Agatha is joined by Teen, later revealed to be a reincarnation of Wanda Maximoff’s son, Billy.
However, as the series progresses, a surprising revelation about the Witches' Road comes up. It was Agatha who had created and popularized the legend about the road, which was later manifested into existence by Billy.
The Witches' Road in Agatha All Along explained
The Witches' Road is initially seen as a trail for people who practice witchcraft. The road can fulfill any wish of the witch who manages to face and win its various trials. To open the portal to the pathway, a witches’ coven has to sing The Ballad of the Witches' Road.
As Agatha wants to regain her powers, she convinces other witches to form a coven and walk the road with her. The group sings the ballad to access the path and face dangerous challenges along the way, losing some of their friends.
However, in Agatha All Along’s final episodes, it is revealed that Agatha had made the whole thing up. The road was not real and it was all a story Agatha created to trick other witches so she could steal their powers.
Agatha began doing so centuries ago in the 1750s. She came up with the idea of stealing other witches’ powers to protect herself and her son, Nicholas, after the Green Witch aka Death told her that her son would not survive for long.
Agatha's son wrote the ballad and used to sing it together. She convinced other witches to join her coven to access the road. Once they did, Agatha stole their powers and killed them to increase her strength.
After Nicholas died at a young age, Agatha became more ruthless. Deeply affected by the grief of losing her son, she continued to kill witches for the next two and a half centuries using the made-up legend of the Witches’ Road.
However, Billy Maximoff unintentionally created a real Witches’ road with his magic. Like his mother, Wanda, who created the town of Westview in WandaVision, Billy used his Chaos magic to bring the road into existence, surprising Agatha.
Billy created the road to search for his lost brother, Tommy. When he realizes the reality of the road in Agatha All Along’s finale, he decides to close the portal and turn it into a resting place for his friends who died facing trials.
The Witches' Road has been featured in Marvel Comics
Unlike Agatha All Along, Marvel Comics portrays the Witches' Road as a real path that is not only based on a legend. The story first appeared in the Scarlet Witch comic series from 2015-2017, where Wanda tries to redeem herself after losing control of her powers and hunting her teammates.
After spending years under other people’s influence, Wanda traversed the road to find herself and understand her powers. She faced several tests which helped her overcome her painful past and learn about the power of witchcraft.
On the other hand, Agatha All Along portrays the road as more than just a magical path. It signifies the dark past of Agatha, the struggles and lessons that come with power, and Billy’s emotional quest to reconnect with his family.
