The Umbrella Academy introduced fans to the dysfunctional Hargreeves family and the unusual events caused by their existence have finally come to an end. Season 4 revealed the two special synthesized elements Marigold and Durango, one of which gave them powers and another almost caused a calamity.

In the final episodes of The Umbrella Academy season 4, Five discovered that all the multiple timelines occur because of their existence, and if they erase themselves through the Cleanse, then the world will get back to the original timeline.

But what is this Cleanse? The Cleanse is the process through which the Hargreeves siblings can remove multiple timelines by merging Marigold and Durango.

The superpowered siblings have Marigold inside them, created by their adoptive mother Abigail Hargreeves.

Durango is a deadly substance that can cause huge destruction. But if Durango and Marigold are merged, they will cause widespread extinction.

This is the Cleanse, the phenomenon used by the Hargreeves siblings, Jennifer and Lila, to remove themselves from the world.

The Umbrella Academy began with the unusual phenomenon on October 1, 1989, caused by Marigold when forty-three babies were born at the same time.

Out of all the children, seven were adopted by Reginald Hargreeves who later trained these children to gain superpowers through Marigold, created by their adoptive mother.

However, following the creation of Marigold, another element called Durango was accidentally made. Unlike Marigold, Durango is highly destructive and can cause huge disasters.

This substance was inside Jennifer (played by Victoria Sawal), introduced in The Umbrella Academy season 4.

Jennifer is one of the key characters in the fourth season, as she carries Durango particles inside her. Though she made her physical appearance in season 4, the Hargreeves siblings have been curious about her since previous seasons.

As the siblings search for Jennifer, they discover that their adoptive father has been hiding Jennifer to prevent The Cleanse. However, Jennifer meets Ben(one of the Hargreeves siblings) and they form an unbreakable bond.

The two are incredibly attached, and as seen in the final episode, they merge and transform into a huge destructive monster.

The giant begins damaging places and would have gradually destroyed the whole world if not stopped by the remaining six Hargreeves siblings on time.

After Jennifer and Ben merge into the giant monster, Luther, Diego, Allison, Klaus, Five, and Viktor, with Lila have to stop them from mass destruction. The only way to save the world and remove multiple timelines is by erasing the Hargreeves siblings.

Since Ben turned into a monster, they had to find a way to bring him and Jennifer to initiate Cleanse. So, the siblings along with Lila decided to merge with Jennifer and Ben. But before that, they left their families on a subway, that would safely take them to the original world.

The Hargreeves siblings and Lila form a circle at the end and bid farewell to each other. Following their final goodbyes, all of them faded away including Ben and Jennifer, erasing all the multiple timeless, and restoring the original world.

At the end of The Umbrella Academy season 4, there's no mention of the Umbrellas as the world has gotten normal and people are seen enjoying their lives, without the threat of any upcoming apocalypse.
