Netflix's latest docuseries, Surviving Black Hawk Down, is based on the Battle of Mogadishu, which saw a bloody fight between the US troops and the local Somalians.

If the name sounds familiar, it was also the subject of Ridley Scott's 2001 war film Black Hawk Down, which starred Ewan McGregor and Josh Hartnett. The movie was a hit and also won two Academy Awards.

The movie was based on Mark Bowden's book Black Hawk Down: A Story of Modern War, which includes accounts of the people involved in a battle, which Scott adapted into a film.

Decades after, through his production company, Ridley Scott Associates, Scott is once again looking back at this historic event through the eyes of people who actually lived this reality. The docuseries features interviews with people who witnessed this historic event.

The docuseries is directed by Jack MacInnes and was released on Netflix on February 10, 2025.

Surviving Black Hawk Down is based on the Battle of Mogadishu, and the official synopsis of the docuseries reads as follows:

''It tells the gripping real story of the horror and heroism behind the events that inspired Ridley Scott’s blockbuster movie Black Hawk Down, blending raw, immersive storytelling with first-person interviews from both sides of the Battle of Mogadishu,”

In the 1980s, the political unrest in Somalia, combined with food shortages and famines, led to an alarming situation, and UN peacemakers were sent to Somalia to restore a government.

A powerful warlord and leader of the Somali National Alliance, Mohamed Farrah Aidid, was blamed for the events, and the coalition forces started a manhunt for the man.

On Oct. 3, 1993, there was news that Aidid's two lieutenants were meeting up in the city, which reached the ears of then-US President Bill Clinton, who sent forces to capture the men. By that time, local Mogadishu residents had also joined the rebellion against the US because of the destruction caused to their loved ones in search of Aidid.

Surviving Black Hawk Down will recount the events of the raid, which turned into a bloody battle, killing 18 US soldiers and many Somalians.

It also marked the taking down of three Black Hawk US helicopters by the local Somalians, who continued to fight on the ground.

Who is featured in Surviving Black Hawk Down?

The three-part docuseries Surviving Black Hawk Down shows both sides of the story, featuring interviews from both the US Army and local Somalians.

It features harrowing accounts of the US Delta Force that were sent to raid Aidid's men and capture them, their experience of what turned into the most gruesome battle since the Vietnam War.

In addition, it also features local residents of Mogadishu and women who found themselves in the middle of a warzone and had nowhere to go.

In addition, according to Netflix's Tudum, it also features an interview with a party photographer turned war documentarian.
