The highly anticipated Squid Game season 2 premiered on Netflix on December 26, 2024. The seven thrilling and action-packed episodes bring back the dangerous game, where one of the 456 players wins a cash prize of 45.6 billion won, and the rest lose their lives.

The second season follows Seong Gi-hun, who once again participates in the game to put an end to it. However, as expected, things turn deadly pretty soon, and the season ends with some tragic deaths.

However, the makers have kept a surprise for the viewers right after the season’s climax as there is a post-credit scene. The Squid Game season 2 post-credit scene teases a new game that will be seen in the third season.

Squid Game season 2 post-credit scene teases a new game with another doll

Following the tragic events and bloodshed in the Squid Game season 2 finale, the screen goes black and the credits begin to roll. However, the viewers are soon brought back into the world of the games with a post-credit scene.

The brief sequence shows three players, 096, 100, and 353, entering a game room. Interestingly, none of these three players are in the spotlight in the second season. The infamous doll, Young-hee, known from the Red Light, Green Light game, then appears on the screen.

Opposite her is another doll, Cheol-su, who is said to be her boyfriend. Both Young-hee and Cheol-su are characters taken from a Korean children’s book. The scene then showcases a train light going from red to green.

Showrunner Hwang Dong-hyuk revealed that the Cheol-su doll would be making his debut in the second season back in June 2022. At the time, Dong-hyuk wrote in a letter to the fans:

“You’ll also be introduced to Young-hee’s boyfriend, Cheol-su.”

The elaborate setup in the Squid Game season 2 post-credit scene hints at a lethal game that would be featured in season 3. While the details of the game are shrouded in mystery, from the post-credit scene it seems like it will be an even more deadly version of Red Light, Green Light, and also involve trains.

Showrunner explains how the Squid Game season 2 post-credit scene sets up season 3

Series creator and showrunner Hwang Dong-hyuk discussed the season 2 post-credit scene in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. He explained how the sequence sets up the future season of the show and teases the ‘most exciting’ game so far:

“That's actually a [sneak peek] of Cheol-su, who, like Young-hee, is a new giant doll that we're going to be showcasing in season 3. And that's also a hint at the most exciting game in season 3 as well. So, while it hasn't been shared yet, I hope everyone will be excited to meet Cheol-su and the new game.”

Squid Game season 3 will mark the final installment of the show. While the creator earlier planned to include the whole story in the second season, the number of episodes increased substantially and had to be split into two installments. The third season will premiere sometime in 2025.

Talking about how he is ready to move on from the show, Dong-hyuk said in an interview with Variety:

“I’m so exhausted. I’m so tired. In a way, I have to say, I’m so sick of Squid Game. I’m so sick of my life making something, promoting something. So I’m not thinking about my next project right now. I’m just thinking about going to some remote island and having my own free time without any phone calls from Netflix.”

Squid Game seasons 1 and 2 are streaming on Netflix.
