Since its debut on HBO on July 11, 2021, The White Lotus has become a popular show that portrays the themes of class differences, wealth, privilege, and tangled human relations. Created by Mike White, the series follows rich guests at a luxurious resort called The White Lotus, exposing the darker side of both guests and staff due to various dysfunctions caused by their week-long vacations.
The show involves dark humor and thriller set in resorts at exotic locations ranging from Hawaii to Siciliy to its recent adventure in Thailand. As the show's popularity grew, the American black comedy drama gained a steady rating of 92 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. The White Lotus bagged five Primetime Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Writing and Outstanding Directing for the first season itself.
The White Lotus Season 3 will premiere on February 16, 2025, on Max.
Why is the HBO show titled The White Lotus?
Creator Mike White came up with the title The White Lotus even before the series itself. In an interview with Vulture, Mike White defined the series The White Lotus as an Edenic location. He stated,
"It's definitely something that exists inside me. You go to these colonial spots, and the architecture, the houses, they're so fantastic! It's so perverse'
He continues,
"You go there and think This is living! This is the house! I want to be Isak Dinesen in Africa!"
The HBO series is based on the white lotus flower, which is a symbol of purity and enlightenment in different cultures, including Buddhism and Hinduism. The series explores the themes of privilege, transformation, and morality, which sit well with the symbolic meaning of the flower. While the resort portrays the exotic and luxurious setting just like a fresh white lotus, the show's plotlines delve into portraying the darker side of humanity depicted by the muddy roots of the lotus.
