People Magazine Investigates features a terrifying attempted murder case
This might serve as a shock to many, but Baron Li did survive nine gunshots, which affected his chest, legs, arms, and hips. The incident left him unconscious and had to undergo life-saving surgery and extensive rehabilitation.
As authorities began investigating the attempted murder, they discovered that it was none other than Li's ex-wife Shaerin Kelly with whom he shares a son Arik, and got separated in 2015. The two have been battling over Arik's custody which was given to Baron Li in 2019.
However, Kelly's desire to take control of Arik's custody and a valuable trust fund set up for his medical care never died. Kelly reportedly wanted to exploit the trust fund and wanted to regain Arik's custody.
So, she planned out an attack on her ex-husband and allegedly offered $13,000 to 17-year-old Joseph Good to kill Li. As revealed in the People Magazine Investigates episode, Kelly first placed a GPS tracking device on Li's car to closely monitor his movements and then planned the attempted murder.

At the time of investigation, authorities discovered Shaerin Kelly's involvement through phone records and surveillance footage. The authorities were able to link her to the crime, followed by the discovery of the assailant —Joseph Good, and his friend who participated in the crime as Good's getaway driver.
As per Kelly's instructions, the teenager approached Baron Li and started firing shots at him. Good immediately fled in a car driven by his friend, Quincy Mendez, who despite having no contention with Li agreed to help Good in exchange for $5,000.
Soon after Kelley, Good, and Mendez's involvement in the attempted murder was identified, they were all arrested and charged. While Good was sentenced to over 12 years, his pal Mendez was ordered more than eight years in a juvenile detention center.

In 2023, Shaerin Kelley was sentenced to 13 years in prison after she pleaded guilty to solicitation to murder in the second degree.
