ABC’s Abbott Elementary is known for its eccentric mix of characters, who all tickle the audience’s funny bone with their antics. The mockumentary sitcom follows the teachers and students of a predominantly Black public school that is severely underfunded.
However, despite the hardships, the faculty continues to endeavor to provide the best possible education to the students. The show’s stellar cast only makes the narrative more engaging with their performances.
The cast gets an exciting addition in the third season as legendary actress Cree Summer joins the show. The actress plays Rosalyn Inez, a librarian at Abbott Elementary School. Summer has a guest recurring role in the show, but is able to shine with her impeccable performance.
Cree Summer plays Rosalyn Inez, a school librarian on Abbott Elementary
Cree Summer is introduced as Rosalyn Inez, aka Miss Inez, a new librarian at Abbott Elementary School in season 3 episode 7, Librarian. She brings a fresh perspective and a lot of enthusiasm to the school.
Ms. Inez is passionate about books. She initiated a new system at the library, which included book reservations and a dedicated checkout process. However, not everyone is happy about the changes, especially Barbara Howard, who is used to borrowing books whenever she wants without following strict rules.
Things get worse between Barbara and Ms. Inez when a scheduling mistake forces Barbara’s kindergarten class to leave the library early. While the librarian tries to help, Barbara sees it as an insult, which leads to a rivalry between the two.
In protest, Barbara marches her students through the school halls and compares Rosalyn’s library rules to a fancy restaurant that would not give her a table. Meanwhile, Ms. Inez proves how good she is at her job by reading stories in a way that captivates the students.
Even Barbara’s class loves her storytelling methods, which makes Barbara feel even more annoyed. While Janine tries to sort things out between the two, she gets caught up in the rivalry. Manny warns her that Barbara’s behavior could end the whole library program.
At first, Janine is nervous about going against Barbara. However, Gregory reminds her that Barbara’s issue is more about personal frustration than the actual program. Janine then gets enough confidence to stand with Ms. Inez and support the library changes.
In the end, Barbara surprises everyone by writing a positive review of the program. She later joins Ms. Inez for a storytime session and uses a funny Jamaican accent to entertain the kids. Apart from her rivalry and eventual truce with Barbara, Ms. Inez also plays a fun role in other school events.
When O’Shon visits the school in Abbott Elementary season 4, Ms. Inez turns up the heat in the library, which helps Ava Coleman notice how attractive the IT guy is. During Halloween, she entertains everyone with her The Cat in the Hat costume.
While Ms. Inez is only a supporting character in the show, she definitely shakes things up at Abbott with her arrival. She challenges people to accept change and makes sure students get the best experience with books.
Cree Summer has brought a unique depth to the character despite playing a guest role, thanks to her extensive experience in the industry. The actress has starred in voice roles in various animated projects over the years, including Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures The Tom and Jerry Show, and The Legend of Vox Machina.
She has also been praised for her roles in the live-action genre, including in the shows Cosmic Love, Better Things, and What We Do In The Shadows, and the films Wild Thing and Blizzard.
Abbott Elementary season 4 airs new episodes on ABC on Wednesdays.
