Riding on the waves of the success of his BAFTA-nominated film Past Lives, Teo Yoo now joins the cast of The Recruit season 2. Delving deep into a world of international espionage and exhilarating spycraft, the debut season of The Recruit was a huge success on Netflix. The Recruit centered around the character of Owen Hendricks, played by Noah Centineo, as the brightest of the young lawyer recruits of the CIA.
While the first season ended on a tight cliffhanger with the shooting of Russian asset Max Meladze by her own daughter, the second season of The Recruit is supposed to take a close look at the Korean spy trade. The character of Owen Hendricks would once again be thrown into the mix with ever-high stakes.
This time, however, he would be aided in his efforts by Jang Kyun, the character that Teo Yoo will play. The character happens to be a dedicated and skilled agent of the Korean National Intelligence Service and will assist Hendricks through every step of the way.
The Recruit season 2 will be released on Netflix on January 30, 2025. In contrast to the debut season, the show's second installment will consist only of six episodes. Here's everything we know.
Teo Yoo's character in The Recruit Season 2 explained
The second season of The Recruit will have much of its action located in South Korea as the narrative revolves around an alarming espionage crisis with far-reaching consequences for the CIA. Thus, Hendricks is sent to the scene as the brightest lawyer recruit of the agency and will be assisted by the character of Jang Kyun, played by Teo Yoo.
Jang Kyun is described as a skilled and dedicated Korean National Intelligence Service agent who will go above and beyond to fulfill his duties. His official character biography describes him as:
"A clever and driven South Korean National Intelligence Service (NIS) agent. Highly skilled with a subversive sense of humor, he’s willing to do anything to protect those he cares about."
Although further details about the character are yet to be declared, it is being surmised that Teo Yoo will be a regular addition to the cast of the Netflix show. In an interview with Tudum by Netflix ahead of the upcoming season's release, Noah Centineo commented about the experience of working with Teo Yoo. He added:
"Rhythm and chemistry are tough phenomenons to have control over. But, thankfully, I was very fortunate to have a partner in Teo for Season 2.”
Showrunner Alexi Hawley further added that the character of Teo Yoo is integral to the narrative, stating:
"It’s a tricky role, because it’s not a buddy comedy between Owen and Jang Kyun. Somebody who will do anything for love is dangerous. … But Owen and Jang Kyun have great energy together. There’s a push and a pull, which is just sort of organic to them.”
Showrunners open up about The Recruit Season 2
Speaking to Tudum by Netflix about the content of the second season of The Recruit, showrunners Alexi Hawley and Noah Centineo revealed that the upcoming season will once again put Hendricks to the test of his abilities. Centioneo stated:
"Owen’s headspace is complete chaos. He has just witnessed Max — the former CIA asset whom he almost died multiple times trying to protect — get shot by her daughter Nichka. Owen is wondering how in the hell he is going to survive the next few seconds of his life.”
To this, Hawley added:
"This show lives in propulsion, so we immediately throw Owen in the deep end, which is where he’s the most fun. It seemed like a great way to start Season 2 — and then we just never let our foot off the gas.”
The Recruit Season 2 drops on Netflix on January 30, 2025.
