Invincible Season 3 featured not one, but two Breaking Bad actors. The first actor was Aaron Paul, voicing the tragic antagonist Powerplex. But it was Jonathan Banks that fans were excited to meet and hear. A lot of fans were expecting that Banks, who had played the role of hitman Mike Ehrmantraut in Breaking Bad, was going to voice the intimidating Viltrumite antagonist Conquest.
However, it turns out fans' expectations were subverted in a good way as Conquest was ultimately voiced by Watchmen's and The Boys' Jeffrey Dean Morgan. Banks, on the other hand, was voicing a character from the Invincible Universe named Brit, who is a super soldier, much like Steve Rogers/Captain America in the Marvel Universe.
Who is Brit? Jonathan Banks' Invincible Season 3 character explained:
While his screen time is very little in the seventh episode of Invincible Season 3, Jonathan Banks' Invincible character made enough of an impression for fans to hope for more in the future seasons. Named Brittany, Brit is one of the Invincible Universe's strongest characters, thanks to a super soldier serum he took at an unspecified time. It is virtually impossible to injure him, and he can't get sick.
In the comics, Brit has an experience of working with Cecil and the GDA. Whenever heroes like The Immortal weren't around, The Guardians of the Globe looked up to Brit as the leader. He especially became one of the trusted confidants of Cecil in the comics after Nolan/Omni-Man's betrayal.
Who voices Conquest in Invincible Season 3?
Despite the earlier fan theories that Jonathan Banks' Invincible character was Conquest, we were all surprised to hear him earlier in the episode as the super soldier Brit. Conquest is instead introduced in the concluding moments of the seventh episode, setting up the Invincible Season 3 finale. Conquest was instead voiced by an actor who was kept secret for a while, Jeffrey Dean Morgan.
Morgan has a history of being involved in several dark and gritty comic book adaptations since 2009. First, he played the role of the immoral, nihilistic vigilante The Comedian in Zack Snyder's 2009 movie Watchmen. After that, he was cast to play Negan in the post-apocalyptic zombie drama The Walking Dead, which was an adaptation of the comics written by Robert Kirkman, who also wrote Invincible.
Morgan then cemented his place in the pantheon of dark and gritty comic book adaptations with his role as Joe Kessler, the darker half of Billy Butcher, in The Boys Season 4.
Therefore, it wasn't surprising when the actor made his way into the Invincible Universe. In fact, Conquest may even share some nihilistic qualities with Morgan's The Comedian from Watchmen. Both Conquest and Edward Blake/The Comedian have no qualms about committing atrocities in the name of an empire/country and not really caring about it.
Morgan and Robert Kirkman sat together for an interview a day after the seventh episode streamed on Prime Video. In that interview, Kirkman was appreciative of Morgan's talents, revealing that the writer was trying to add the actor:
"Probably since the beginning of the show's existence.... Conquest needs a lot of nuance. There's a tremendous amount of personality there, even though he is this giant, powerful brute that's just wrecking things. And I knew Jeffrey could bring that."
Considering Conquest is alive (but in captivity unknown to Mark) in the closing moments of Invincible Season 3, we can't wait to see more of him.
The entirety of Invincible Season 3 is streaming on Prime Video now.
