Apple TV+’s Silo, a dystopian drama series, based on Hugh Howey’s Wool Trilogy, follows Juliette Nichols (Rebecca Ferguson), an engineer, who later became a sheriff as she tries to understand what is outside the Silo while also heading the community living inside it.
Silo Season 1 ending gave a better idea about the much talked outside and was the real condition there. People living in the silo had always been warned against going outside and whoever did make that trip, did not survive and collapsed as residents of the silo watched them in horror.
The finale of season 1 sees Juliette finally going outside to explore the environment there and along with her the viewers also understand that it is indeed a land of toxic waste and barrenness outside the silo.
With Silo Season 2 just around the corner, let us have a quick look at the real outside as shown in Silo Season 1 finale.
The article contains spoilers for Silo Season 1.

What is the real outside in Silo?
Throughout Silo Season 1, the one question that has haunted almost everyone is regarding the outside and if what is discussed inside the silo is indeed true about the outside.
Certain clues were revealed when Allison (Rashida Jones) decided to leave the silo and ventured into the outside world. Allison did not trust the bleak portrayal of the outside world that the silo displayed and believed that the skies out there must be blue.
She mentioned this to her husband Holston (David Oyelowo) and also told him that if she finds out that she is right once she leaves the silo, she would clean the glasses with her wool. Eventually she does as she said and it seems that the outside is indeed beautiful and not bleak.
However, it is in episode 10 that the viewers get the real view of the outside. As Juliette’s request to venture outside gets approved, she tells Bernard,
"I'm not afraid"
and goes out into nature that appears to have greens, birds, and blue skies. However, here’s the thing, Juliette notices that the birds that are flying outside are following the exact same pattern as shown in the video and that makes her realize that it is the display on the helmet that is false and whatever is shown of the outside world inside the silo is the truth.
Getting some assistance from Walker (Harriet Walter), Juliette gets more time than anyone previously ever had to explore the world outside the silo. This means that the fake display on her helmet eventually goes out and the hellish outside world is revealed to her.
It finally gets clear that the real outside in Silo is a nuclear wasteland. The fake helmet view is only there as a reassurance, so anyone who decides to go out won’t be able to see the truth that is being kept a secret before they die.
The truth of the outside is that there are dozens of other silos in that wasteland and beyond those silos that are buried underground lies the ravaged skyline of a city. While is not sure how much oxygen Juliette has left in her suit, it can be hoped to be enough for her to get a better understanding of the hell that the outside world is.
