Amazon Prime Video continues to intrigue its users, but this time we're not talking about an original film or TV series, but the streaming platform's latest feature! Prime Video has named it X-Ray Recaps, which uses generative AI to frame spoiler-free and engaging summaries for all Amazon MGM Studios original series.
So, if you've been looking for something that summarizes an episode without dropping spoilers, Prime Video's X-Ray Recaps is for you. The feature is made while keeping in mind how AI can be helpful and engaging for users.
While talking about the feature and its aim, the Vice President of Product at Prime Video, Adam Gray praised the team working behind X-Ray Recaps. He explained:
"With the creation of X-Ray Recaps, we’re directly addressing a common problem customers face when streaming content: forgetting where they left off"
The feature's context-aware AI technology helps in analyzing key moments of a show and summarizes it to the point where you've watched the show. This means if a user has left off mid-season, X-Ray Recaps will only frame a summary for those episodes. Read below to learn more about this AI feature.
Everything to know about Prime Video's new AI generative feature X-Ray Recaps
As mentioned above, Prime Video's X-Ray Recaps uses context-aware AI technology to summarize the story not only for episodes, but full seasons too. Users can easily access this feature to watch recaps directly from the Prime Video detail page or during playback through the X-Ray interface.
However, the AI feature is in beta and is available for the U.S. subscribers of Prime Video using Amazon’s Fire TV devices. The streaming platform is planning to expand to other devices by the end of 2024. You can watch the AI recaps of shows including Upload, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, The Wheel of Time, Daisy Jones & the Six, and The Boys.
Amazon Bedrock is the technology behind these recaps, an AWS service that supports generative AI applications. Amazon has used the combination of two types of models —Bedrock models and custom models through Amazon SageMaker for both, video clips and subtitles in the recap by detecting key information including significant events, places, times, and conversations.
A look at how users are reacting to Prime Video's latest X-Ray Recaps feature
While many believe that the feature is utilizing AI in a great way, others still seem to prefer the old way of enjoying recap. The X-Ray Recaps feature is receiving mixed reviews on social media platforms, notably X (formerly Twitter).

"Honestly one of the best uses of AI"
Another user @GnikJSivart stated:
"This is going to be so useful and save me so much time. I wonder how many times I'll go back and watch the full season anyway or just rely on the recap... you selected."
With many happy with the X-Ray Recaps feature, and calling it a remarkable use of generative AI, some users don't share the same excitement. User @LoveSportMan wrote:
"How about no? I dont want this."
User @EmpressSwathi said:
"I’d rather not have this. This is a first step to giving this to AI instead of a person."
Additionally, Amazon hasn't confirmed if this new feature will apply to older shows as well, as it's currently only available for the above-mentioned series. So if you've been tired of watching an entire story to know what happened previously on a show, X-Ray Recaps will make the task easy for you!
