Before Bosch: Legacy's cancellation in September 2024, there were definite plans already underway for a fourth season. Actor Titus Welliver, who starred as Harry Bosch, revealed that the production team had begun working on the plot for Season 4 during Season 3 filming.

The initial concepts included Harry Bosch returning to work as a volunteer detective with the San Fernando Police Department. This would have been a change from his position as a private investigator in the Legacy series and a reaffirmation of his law enforcement roots, just like in Michael Connelly's book series.

The series, which followed the original Bosch series based on Connelly's novels, still had additional source material to tap into. Welliver said that the writers and actors were already thinking about new directions for the character.

But with the cancellation of the show, those plans were shelved. Nevertheless, Welliver has indicated other potential avenues for furthering Bosch's story, including a feature film.

Harry Bosch's planned return to police work

Titus Welliver shared with TV Insider that during the filming of Season 3, the concept for Season 4 arose. He said:

“One day, after a scene, I said, ‘I feel like a cop again. I feel like Harry is doing that work again,’ and that prompted the discussion of, ‘Let’s get Harry back on the job.'”

The group started planning on writing a story in which Harry Bosch would volunteer to be a detective for the San Fernando Police Department. This concept continued from Michael Connelly's novels.

In the novels, Bosch, after he departs from the LAPD, collaborates with the San Fernando Police Department to pursue his detective activities. As reported by TV Insider, this was what Season 4 was intended to do, with a mix of book content and original writing.

Bosch: Legacy's connection to Michael Connelly's novels

Bosch: Legacy takes its inspiration from the novels by Michael Connelly. Although the original Bosch series centered on Bosch as an LAPD detective, Legacy presented Bosch in retirement and now as a private investigator. The books take it further, providing the authors with more source material to use.

TV Insider stated that Bosch's return to police work was in line with the books. Season 4 would have resumed the character to more active crime-solving. That would have provided the show with an opportunity to try new cases and carry on Harry Bosch's maturation.

Possible Bosch film in the future

Although the fourth season of Bosch: Legacy was canceled, it is still possible that the series may continue. Welliver states that there is a chance of a Bosch movie. This was in his interview with TV Insider, where he said that a film could be made based on Bosch, just like they have done to characters such as Jack Ryan and Reacher.

Welliver echoed this sentiment in a different interview with Collider. He stated that everyone involved in the show would be willing to come back if there were an opportunity to do so. This implies that although the show might be finished for the time being, the Harry Bosch character could potentially make future appearances in other projects.

Another Bosch universe spinoff is in development

Even though Bosch: Legacy is concluding, the Bosch universe will likely persist in other forms. A new spinoff is in production now, centered on Michael Connelly's novel character Renée Ballard. As TV Insider reports, this new series will feature Maggie Q as Ballard.

Titus Welliver has already confirmed that he will be featured in this spinoff series via cameo appearances. Although the main emphasis will be on Renée Ballard, the presence of Bosch ensures the character's storyline could still develop in some form via this new series.

Bosch: Legacy is available to watch on Prime Video.
