Netflix's newest true crime docuseries, The Kings of Tupelo, is a bizarre tale of events in Mississippi, Tupelo, about an Elvis impersonator, Paul Kevin Curtis.
Hailing from a town filled with Elvis impersonators, Paul also wanted to make a career out of this act. But little did he know that the path ahead would change his life forever.
The Kings of Tupelo is a three-part docuseries on Netflix released on December 11, 2024. It brings forth a bizarre Southern tale that would fail the plot of any thriller movie.
Paul Kevin Curtis, the man behind this saga, narrates this incident about his life while chilling at his “Shangri-La” – a paddling pool in his backyard, at an 'undisclosed location'.
While Paul was a good Elvis impersonator, he thought of a 'Double-Trouble' act with his brother Jack Curtis. An act with two Elvis impersonators would reimagine what would happen if Elvis' stillborn twin had survived.
The act took a hit, and Paul also married Laura, an Elvis fan, through these acts. But a sinister future was ahead for the couple.
More about The Kings of Tupelo in our story.
The Kings of Tupelo Paul Kevin Curtis discovered human body parts in the Morgue freezer
After he married his wife and started a family, the double act with his brother could not pay the bills anymore. So, Paul took a part-time job as a janitor in a nearby hospital, and that was when things started to take a sinister turn.
In 1999, Paul was enjoying the hospital's Christmas bash when one of his staff members called him to examine the backed-up drainage system in the morgue. Paul went inside in his hazmat suit.
After about an hour, he went to the morgue freezer to get himself a Dr. Pepper drink, but to his horror, there were no drinks in the freezer. Instead, the morgue's freezer was filled with many human body parts, wrapped in plastic with bar codes.
While there is nothing very bizarre about seeing a freezer full of body parts in a morgue, Paul was convinced that it was a case of human trafficking because he recognized one of the 'heads' as a man who he had seen in the hospital just a few days back.
What troubles did Paul's conspiracy theories land him in The Kings of Tupelo?
While the hospital denied Paul's accusations, saying that the parts belonged to donors, which they also told in The Kings of Tupelo, he was convinced that there was more to those body parts.
This incident led him into a dark web of suspicion and conspiracy theories, which pushed everyone away from him. He investigated the black market and wrote his findings in a book titled Missing Pieces. His wife left him, and he also lost ties with his family and brother.
In April 2013, Curtis was arrested after ricin-laced letters sent to President Obama were traced to him. However, he was released because of a lack of evidence.
