Max's Dune: Prophecy concluded Season 1 and the show is already on its way to Season 2.

Expanding on the Dune lore written by Frank Herbert, which was adapted into the Dune movies by Denis Villeneuve, the Max series is based on the Sisterhood of Dune, written by Herbert's son Brian and Kevin Anderson.

The show is set between the Butlerian Jihad and the birth of Paul Atreides, during which the Bene Gesserit (Sisterhood) was formed. While the Dune movies introduced them, the series tells their origin story some 10,000 years before.

Sister Valya and Tula are important members of this organization who hold great power and want to build a calculated system of inbreeding that will ensure the birth of the Kwisatz Haderach, the Messiah who will save humanity.

This Messiah, Paul Atreides, in the movies, will eventually be born but will refuse to stay in the Sisterhood's shadows and will follow his own path to free the Fremen people.

More on Bene Gesserit in Dune: Prophecy in our story.

What is the Bene Gesserit? Exploring its origins in Dune: Prophecy

The Bene Gesserit, as introduced in Herbert's novel, is a mystical sect and an ancient organization of female theologians and spies. While the organization's origins are unclear in the novel, it was formed after the Butlerian Jihad, soon after which Max's Dune: Prophecy takes place.

Also known as the Sisterhood, the sect has many names and has a Reverend Mother at its apex, as was shown in Raquella Berto-Anirul in Episode 1. She is the most powerful female in the Sisterhood, who is betrothed with the powers and the memories of her predecessors and will pass on her powers to a suitable member of the organization.

Dune: Prophecy saw Valya Harkonnen wanting to be the next Mother Superior after Raquella's death.

What is the Voice of Bene Gesserit in Dune: Prophecy? Exploring their role in Dune 3

As established in the Dune movies, Bene Gesserit meticulously planned and calculated the birth of Paul Atreides, who they believe will be the Kwisatz Haderach, the savior of humanity. Their influence in politics is expanded in Dune: Prophecy, which comes to fruition in the finale when the Emperor realizes that he was merely a puppet for the Sisterhood and takes his life.

The members of the Bene Gesserit assume multiple roles, like secret agents, royal concubines, and assassins, and rule through their selected pawns within the Imperium, like Javicco in the Max series.

The Voice is also one of the significant aspects of the Bene Gesserit, which Raquella first introduced, but Valya uses it for the first time in Dune: Prophecy Episode 1 when she uses it to force Dorotea to kill herself.

Bene Gesserit will also play a significant role in Dune 3, which will be the last chapter of the Dune trilogy and Paul Atreides' story. While the organization worked for 10,000 years for the birth of Paul, as their ultimate goal is to advance humanity to high levels of intellectualism, their plans didn't succeed as Paul abandoned their beliefs and refused to work under their shadow.

It will be interesting to see how their conflict with the movie's central character pans out and where it will take the Dune universe.
