Severance Season 2 Episode 4 was one shocking twist after the other. From the secret revelation about Helly/Helena and Irving's termination by Milchik from Lumon, the latest episode was packed with many twists.

In addition to these twists, the episode also revealed some subtle details that have sparked a popular fan theory about what exactly happens at Lumon. Since the show's inception, fans have wondered what the severed employees do there.

The only thing we know so far is that they refine a cluster of numbers into different groups of four based on their feelings, which makes zero sense. The goat lady and the goat room hinted that Lumon is experimenting with cloning and trying to bring back their found, Kier Eagan.

Since then, many theories like cloning, AI generation, and resurrection have floated on the internet.

Here are a few theories on what Lumon's work might be about in Severance.

Severance Season 2 hints that Lumon might be cloning their employees

Severance Season 2's latest episode felt like a fever dream, where all the severed employees finally get a day off their office walls and step out for some team bonding exercise, which does not end well for at least one of them.

Since the show's inception, many allusions have been made to twins, who are now prominently featured. Since every aspect of the show later proves to be a subtle foreshadowing, fans are speculating about what these twins might mean.

In addition to Kier's twin and Ms. Casey and Gemma's resemblance, the MDR employees meet strange-looking humans in Severance's latest episode, who tell them the direction to Woe's Hollow.

These uncanny figures also resembled MDR employees, rekindling the popular Severance theory that Lumon engages in cloning.

After Adam Scott and Patricia Arquette's interviews with Entertainment Weekly, where they debunked the cloning theory, were released, people scratched this theory. But the emergence of strange-looking twins hints that Lumon might be cloning people.

Exploring Reddit fan theories about Lumon's work in Severance Season 2

Since the cast has debunked the cloning theory, some fans have also pointed out that the twins could be AI-generated versions of the MDR employees, and Lumon is trying to replace their human workforce with AI.

Some Reddit users, like u/thatgingerjz, also think that MDR employees are refining the personalities of dead people like Kier and Lumon is storing them in goats to resurrect them later:

''I don't think it's cloning per say - I think Lumon is storing refined personalities / past Egans in the goats. They're a temporary vessel until they have a human body to be moved into''

Another popular theory floating around is that Lumon might be experimenting to transfer human consciousness into machines and make the human mind into an AI. A Reddit user, u/General-Art-4714, notes:

''...consciousness uploaded into a machine or another human. There’s a montage of quotes from Ricken’s book after Milchick drops it. It says “man is better than machine because machines can’t think. And also humans have skin. I think they either tried copying people to machines and that didn’t work. So now they’re trying to copy people into other people to stay immortal. Or something?''
