Taylor Sheridan and John Linson produced Yellowstone, a popular American drama series. It was broadcast on Paramount Network from 2018 and 2024. The show follows the Dutton family, who own Montana's largest ranch, as they deal with disputes with developers, the Broken Rock Indian Reservation, and Yellowstone National Park.
The film, starring Kevin Costner, Kelly Reilly, and Luke Grimes, combines family drama, power battles, and Western action. The fifth and final season include a sequel, The Madison, as well as prequels 1883 and 1923 that delve into the Dutton family's history.
Beth Dutton, played by Kelly Reilly in the show, is a fearless and determined leader. She suffers from PTSD, maybe borderline personality disorder, and deep-seated remorse about prior experiences. She flourishes in Wyoming, leading the family company despite feelings of fury, self-destruction, and a thick façade that conceals her grief.
More about Beth’s mental condition in
Yellowstone
Beth Dutton first made an appearance in Yellowstone during “Daybreak.” She is introduced as an extremely intelligent but deeply emotionally scorned individual. From her teenage years, her life has been filled with misfortunes since she lost her mother in a horseback riding accident. As a result of blaming herself for this tragedy, Beth develops self-destructive tendencies coupled with deep remorse.
As the series progresses, more of Beth's horrible past is uncovered. When her brother Jamie took her to get an abortion without informing her that the procedure would render her incapable of having children, it marked one of the most pivotal moments in her life. This betrayal causes Beth intense hatred for Jamie and influences how she interacts with him for the rest of the series.
Beth shows symptoms of PTSD in her daily actions. Her psychological state shifts incredibly fast – she can be emotionally fragile one moment and full of rage the next. The emotional strain that she seems unable to cope with is evident in her aggressive fights, excessive drinking, and reckless behavior. Her outbursts towards those who are closest to her, including her longtime partner and later husband Rip Wheeler, indicate deeper issues of fear of abandonment and difficulty maintaining intimate relationships.
Experts and some viewers have also identified characteristics linked to borderline personality disorder (BPD). Beth demonstrates impulsive acts, strong emotional responses, and a demand for control over her surroundings. She frequently pushes people away before pursuing their approval and assistance. She exhibits a strong yet complex commitment to those she trusts, as evidenced by her passionate loyalty to Rip and her father despite her harsh manner.
