Severance Season 2 is back after almost 3 years and with each new episode, the Lumon mysteries keep getting more intense. In the latest episode, titled, Who is Alive, the show circles back to one of the biggest mysteries that was only hinted at in season 1.
Fans would remember Mark S (Adam Scott) and Helly R. (Britt Lower) unexpectedly coming across a goat room in Severance Season 1. They saw a man feeding goats and upon seeing Mark and Helly, angrily asked them to get out since the goats were not ready.
Nothing more was discussed about these goats in that season and it remained one of the major questions that season 2 needed to answer. Now, in Severance Season 2 Episode 3 the goat room, called the Mammalians Nurturable comes back. It is a room that looks after animals.
While it does not answer all the questions that one might have, it certainly gives some insight into Lumon’s motivations, and the goats are a part of it.
The article contains spoilers.

Mammalians Nurturable is revealed to be the goat department in Severance Season 2
Mammalians Nurturable simply means a place that nurtures mammals, which in this case, are the goats. In Severance Season 2 Episode 3, Mark and Helly again explore the severed floor and after some confusion, reach the goat room, which looks significantly expanded with lush greenery and more people.
Gwendoline Christie’s Lorne is introduced here, the head of this department. Her first question to Mark and Helly is if they have come to kill her. Mark eventually earns her trust and tells her they are only looking for Ms. Casey (Dichen Lachman).
More members from her team appear and there is something odd about these employees as most of them are disheveled or injured with one person who wears a goat mask, probably to mingle better with the goats. Moreover, it is also confirmed that these are all severed employees, something that was not certain in the first season.
Lorne initially denies knowing anything about Ms. Casey, but then eventually reveals that she did come to their department to do wellness sessions. However, she does not seem to be aware of what happened to her and thinks she has retired as Lumon mentioned.
As the members of Mammalians Nurturable scrutinize Mark and Helly, Lorne asks them to show them their bellies. Despite this being a strange request, Mark and Helly oblige, and seeing their bellies, Lorne exclaims that they do not have pouches.
This can be a hint to some other mystery or can be a sign of Lumon being wild for speculating the rumor that Macro Dara Refinement employees have pouches where they keep parasitic larvae that will slowly eat the host and subsequently replace them.

What does Mammalians Nurturable signify in Severance Season 2?
While the purpose of Mammalians Nurturable is not completely clear till now, it seems that Lumon is using the goats for some cloning test purposes. There is already an ongoing suspicion of Lumon being involved in cloning and maybe the goats are the test subjects.
Given the fact that most of the employees at the Mammalians Nurturable seemed to be injured in some way or the other, it might mean that they were brought here after they had met some kind of unfortunate accident and then cloned and severed.
The same can be said about Ms. Casey as well, who was killed in an accident but was found to be alive inside the Lumon office, serving as an employee named Gemma. Moreover, given the kind of show that Severance is, the goats could be a metaphor as well.
With Mammalians Nurturable making an appearance in episode 3, it now remains to be seen whether this season shows anything more about the department or the goats and what purpose they serve to Lumon.
Severance Season 1 and episodes 1-3 of Season 2 can be streamed on Apple TV+. New episodes drop weekly, every Friday.
