The second season of Mayfair Witches premiered recently on January 5 finally putting an end to the anticipation of the show's fans. Mayfair Witches is an adaptation of the book series of the same name written by Anne Rice. The show follows the bloodline of a powerful family of witches that emanated from Suzanne Mayfair back in seventeenth-century Scotland.

Lasher is a demonic entity and a malevolent spirit who is deeply tied to the origins of the line of witches, in the sense that he was the one who bestowed the powers of witchcraft on Suzanne and saved her from death. According to the narrative of Mayfair Witches, Suzanne once made a pact with the devil to secure her powers of witchcraft. The deal went as expected and the entreaties were received by Lasher, the demonic spirit.

When it became known that Suzanne was a witch, the contemporary Scottish society called for her execution. However, it was Lasher who came to Suzanne's rescue and saved her from being executed. Therefore, it can be said that in a way, the entire bloodline of witches and the family itself that sprung from Suzanne owe their existence to Lasher. Here's everything that we know.

Who is Lasher from Mayfair Witches?

As per Mayfair Witches lore, Lasher isn't simply a human being. He is a malevolent demonic entity that possesses the powers of shapeshifting and teleportation. He has been wandering the realms of the living for centuries in the hopes of having a human body that will allow him to enter the order of the world. Throughout the debut season of the show, Lasher, played by Jack Huston, thoroughly manipulates the character of Rowan.

Rowan is the present-day descendant of the witch line that started from Suzanne. The show had established right at the beginning that Lasher would be able to absolve himself and gain entry into the human world with the help of the thirteenth witch, which in this case happens to be Rowan (Alexandra Daddario). Therefore Lasher's relationship with Rowan is integral and drives the story forward.

Lasher's connection with Suzanne was revealed in the sixth episode of Mayfair Witches season one, in which it was explained that Lasher's contribution to keeping Suzanne alive led to the development of the line of witches that ends with Rowan as the thirteenth witch. By the end of the debut season, Lasher's plans seem to be close to fruition as he is able to earn the place of Rowan's confidant and advises her to get rid of Keith. Ultimately, Lasher possesses Rowan's child with Cipriem and thus his entry into the mortal world seems inevitable.

Showrunners open up about adapting Anne Rice's book for television

In an exclusive interview with Variety magazine from 2023, Mayfair Witches producer Esta Spalding and creator Michelle Ashford spoke at length about the process of adapting Anne Rice's novels for television. When asked about whether their screenplay would ever take a detour from the original material, Spalding noted:

"There is so much richness in the books that we are just trying to mine what we can, which doesn’t mean there won’t be places of overlap because she had places where worlds and characters overlapped. But so far, it has been about taking the riches of the first book and navigating those."

Ashford then added:

"So much gets left on the table already, because the first book is over a thousand pages. It is hard, because there is a very serious fanbase out there, and when things get left behind, it can be upsetting to people. But it was about taking the best and the most dramatically coherent pieces of it and pulling it together."

Mayfair Witches Season 2 airs on Saturdays on AMC.
