Jod Na Nawood, played by Jude Law, is one of the most mysterious characters in Star Wars: Skeleton Crew. In Episode 7, "We're Gonna Be in So Much Trouble," fans wonder about his hidden past. Jod is a sensitive rogue to the Force and has a dark, unclear history.
His understanding of the Jedi Order hints that he knows about their ways, even though he was never a Jedi. Some fans think he might have survived Order 66, where the Jedi were hunted down. Others believe he may have wanted to become a Jedi but was rejected, leaving him with a sense of loss.
His character is made even more mysterious by his dislike of droids, his twisted way of following Jedi teachings, and his tense relationships with the young castaways he uses for his purposes. This has made Jod one of the most interesting characters in Star Wars: Skeleton Crew.
But does his sad history with the Jedi Order deserve more attention? Below, we look at his connection to the Force, his knowledge of Jedi beliefs, and his harsh behavior toward Wim to try to figure out his past.
Jod Na Nawood’s Force sensitivity hints at untapped potential on Star Wars: Skeleton Crew
Jod’s power with the Force is clear, but he doesn’t have the control of a trained Jedi. In Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, he shows strong Force abilities—so strong that the kids think he could be a Jedi. But in Episode 7, his lightsaber skills are messy and don’t follow the careful techniques of Jedi fighting.
This matches what fans think: that Jod never had proper Jedi training.
“Jod’s unrefined use of the Force and lack of lightsaber technique point to a life outside the Jedi Order,” notes Madeline Matsumoto-Duyan of CBR.
Instead, Jod might have developed his skills himself, much like the boy with the broom in The Last Jedi.
This leads to an interesting question: could Jod have been noticed by the Jedi but never got to join because of things outside his control? Maybe his family didn’t allow him to go, or the galaxy was too chaotic after the Clone Wars for the Jedi to recruit anyone.
Jod’s knowledge of Jedi principles on Star Wars: Skeleton Crew reflects a twisted admiration
Jod Na Nawood seems to know a lot about Jedi teachings—like quoting Qui-Gon Jinn and telling Wim to let go of his attachments—which shows he’s studied the Jedi Order carefully. But he uses their ideas in a way that only benefits himself.
In Star Wars: Skeleton Crew Episode 5, "You Have a Lot to Learn About Pirates," Jod tricks Wim by twisting Jedi advice. He tells Wim to forget about the people and things he cares about and just focus on staying alive.
Jod Na Nawood even repeats Qui-Gon Jinn’s words, saying to Wim:
“Your focus determines your reality.”
But while the Jedi use this teaching to help others, Jod Na Nawood uses it to justify his selfish and greedy behavior. This twisted mindset might come from his failed dream of becoming a Jedi.
As Matsumoto-Duyan explains,
“Jod’s backstory may involve unrequited admiration for the Order, turning to resentment and self-interest over time.”
This shift in his character makes him more complicated, which, in a way, asks for pity and moral confusion.
Jod’s behavior toward Wim shows his inner struggle
Among the young survivors, Jod is especially harsh with Wim, who loves the Jedi and looks up to them. In Star Wars: Skeleton Crew Episode 7, Jod Na Nawood’s mean treatment of Wim seems especially cruel, maybe because he’s projecting his broken dreams onto him.
Thor Skywalker, a Star Wars: Skeleton Crew expert, shares in their YouTube video:
“Wim reminds Jod of his younger self, someone who might have once dreamed of being a Jedi but was never given the chance.”
Jod Na Nawood's betrayal of Wim's trust—and the Jedi values Wim deeply believes in—might be Jod's way of dealing with his own disappointment.
By making Wim lose faith in the Jedi, Jod is, in a way, destroying the hope he once had for himself. This also shows Jod as a sad character: someone who was shaped by missed opportunities and deep regret.
