Lioness Season 2 continues Joe McNamara's journey as the in-charge of the titular CIA operation, while also adding some new and fascinating characters to the narrative. In the second season of the Paramount+ spy thriller drama, actress Genesis Rodriguez has joined the cast.
Genesis Rodriguez plays the role of Josephina Carrillo, aka Josie, in Lioness season 2. She is a skilled helicopter pilot who is recruited into the program. Josephina is seen performing high-octane action stunts in the show as part of various dangerous missions.
For her role, Genesis stated that she had to undergo a transformation with immense discipline and a strict routine, which allowed her to go beyond her comfort zone and 'use her physical body to help tell the story.'
The actress, who is also known for her roles in the shows The Umbrella Academy and Time After Time, revealed how she prepared to play the character which is physically very different from her real personality.
Genesis Rodriguez talks about how she underwent intense training for Lioness season 2
Genesis Rodriguez talked about how she prepared for her role as Josephina in Lioness season 2 in an interview with ScreenRant. The actress explained that contrary to her character, who is physically very active, she is very relaxed in real life. She said:
"You know what? I didn't know I had it (intense training) in me. I had no idea. I didn't even know, because truthfully, my spirit animal is a sloth in real life. [Laughs] This character is a huge departure from who I am. And I was slowly turning from sloth to a lioness! And really, I love acting. It's my favorite thing in the world. I'm so, so grateful I get to do what I love to do."
Genesis further elaborated on how she picked up the physical nuances of the character, from her confident walk to her disciplined persona. She also highlighted how Josephina's body language tells a story:
"This character, in particular, gave me the opportunity to use my physical body to help tell the story. And it's the story of someone who's regimented, who's routined, who has a checklist."
"When you see her walk, you know exactly who she is. She's very hard on herself, and she's disciplined. And that, already, is telling the story, the physicality of it."
Since Josephina is a pilot in Lioness season 2, Genesis revealed she had to learn the ins and outs of flying a helicopter, and realized how it requires immense physical strength:
"When it comes to helicopters and being a helicopter pilot, from getting training and flying the helicopter, I realized that you have to be strong to pick up the tail and to move the plane where you needed to go so you could take off. Like, this is a job! This is part of the requirement, so you need to have that. For me, give me a character where I have to gain weight and lose the weight, and let me transform completely, because it only helps the work and it informs the work."
The actress has also impressed the audience with her fit and toned body, necessary to play Josephina. Genesis said she is always willing to take up characters where she can gain or lose weight, as physical transformation helps in her acting.
