Fans of Euphoria have been waiting patiently since early 2022 for the return of their favorite teen drama. But the show's future seemed uncertain with delays caused by production issues and unfinished scripts. Though rumors of the show’s return were floating around, very little progress was made until now.
Recently, it has been confirmed that filming for season 3 will begin in January. The new season will move the story beyond high school, with the same cast returning according to HBO's statement.
This news has reignited hope for fans who had almost given up on seeing the next chapter.
The time jump in Euphoria Season 3
One of the most exciting aspects of the upcoming season is the confirmed time jump. The idea of moving the story beyond high school was teased at the end of season 2 when Rue reflected on her past.
Many fans speculated that season 3 would pick up after a significant time has passed, and Zendaya confirmed this in an interview with Entertainment Weekly's podcast: The Awardist, saying it will be interesting to explore the characters as adults.
I don't actually know much about what is happening. I don't quite know exactly what the season is going to look like, but I do know that the time jump is happening and I know it's important because there's only so much high school drama you can deal with — "and then she cheats on her boyfriend again!" To me, at least, it is [exciting], and it will be fascinating to see and understand these characters outside of the context of high school and how all the stuff that we saw when they were kids and they were in high school affects the kind of adulthood they have and who they become in a much bigger world. I'll be interested to see what happens too.
Though the time jump offers a fresh direction for the story, it also comes with its challenges. HBO executives explained that moving the characters out of high school required careful thought.
The team had to figure out how far into the future to set the story while keeping the same cast, who have all grown significantly since season 1.
Moving the story forward allows for deeper character development. Instead of focusing on teenage issues, the show can now explore how the characters navigate adulthood. It’s a logical next step for Euphoria, which has always been more than just a high school drama.
When Euphoria Season 3 will begin filming
After much anticipation, it has finally been confirmed that Euphoria season 3 will begin filming in January 2025. While the delays have been frustrating, the news that production is moving forward has brought back excitement for fans.
HBO’s programming executive, Francesca Orsi, expressed her enthusiasm, saying they are thrilled to continue their creative partnership with Sam Levinson and the cast.
So, why did Euphoria face so many delays? It turns out there were several factors. First, series creator Sam Levinson reportedly had trouble finalizing the scripts. There were also disagreements about where the story should go next.
On top of that, the cast’s newfound popularity in Hollywood made scheduling more complicated.
Many of the stars, including Zendaya, Sydney Sweeney, and Jacob Elordi, have gone on to work on major projects. Zendaya has become a staple in Marvel movies as MJ in Spider-Man, while Sydney Sweeney has starred in hit films like Madame Web and Anyone But You.
The scheduling conflict meant it was hard to find a time that worked for everyone.
Then, in July 2023, the tragic death of Angus Cloud, who played Fezco, further delayed the production. Changes had to be made to the script, and the show had to take time to recover from such a significant loss.
Season 2 recap
If you’re trying to remember where Euphoria left off, season 2 ended with a lot of unresolved issues. Rue (Zendaya) delivered a closing monologue that hinted at her future beyond high school, leaving the door open for a time jump.
Meanwhile, Ashtray was presumed dead after a police standoff, and Fezco’s fate was left unclear. Rue also reflected on her relationship with Jules, suggesting that some closure had been reached.
With filming set to begin in early 2025 and a time jump that takes the characters into adulthood, Euphoria season 3 promises to be a new chapter in the lives of Rue and her friends.
Although the delays have tested fans' patience, the return of the full cast and the fresh direction of the story have renewed excitement.
