Fans were uncertain about Monty Miller’s fate after the finale of Landman. Played by Jon Hamm, Monty was one of the major characters in the show and therefore, even after the finale showed him on his deathbed, due to the lack of a clear confirmation regarding his living status, much speculation was going on about whether he survived or passed away.

These speculations have now come to an end as Landman co-creator Christian Wallace, has confirmed in post-finale interviews that Monty Miller is indeed dead. As he said to Variety,

“It is safe to say that Monty has passed, but when you take one major player off the board, it opens up opportunities for other players — and I think that’s all I’m at liberty to say at this point.”

Let us now explore what Jon Hamm had to say about his character’s fate and what his death means for Billy Bob Thornton’s Tommy Norris and Demi Moore’s Cami Miller, Monty’s wife.

Jon Hamm confirms Monty Miller will not be coming back in Landman

As mentioned previously, Monty Miller is dead in Landman. Already suffering from heart issues, Monty could not survive another heart attack and the third bypass surgery that was required to save him.

His heart condition was consistently hinted at throughout the episodes of Landman, as Monty’s wife asked him to have a healthier and less stressful life. Things get complicated in episode 9 as his condition was shown to be getting worse while being admitted to the hospital.

Since the confirmation of Monty’s death, Jon Hamm talked about his character to The Hollywood Reporter, mentioning,

“I’m just so mystified about how great the show is. It’s truly a spectacular thing to be a part of. I’m glad that you guys are liking it. I’m glad that everybody is on board.”

Moreover, because of scheduling conflicts, it was decided from the very beginning that Hamm would be doing one season of Landman so his death is final, as Hamm himself said,

“You don't come back from that. He's no longer with us."

Hamm also mentioned that the show had laid down the foundation well for Miller’s death as it was always clear that he put his work above everything, which was harming his health badly.

Therefore, his death does not come as a shock regarding the logical part of it but given the kind of importance that Monty Miller had, killing him off in a single season does bring a twist to the narrative and opens it up to multiple possibilities.

What does Monty Miller’s death mean for Tommy and Cami in Landman?

Though being played by Demi Moore, Monty’s wife, Cami’s character was not given much space in Landmand and she did not serve any major purpose to the plotline either. However, since Monty is now dead, that might mean that Cami will have more power in the next season, in case that happens. As told by Hamm to USA Today,

"It's pretty cool that Taylor said to (Moore), 'Trust me, I'm going to take care of you. This will be worth your while.' To say the least. Cami's got so much room to grow and show who she really is. It's going to be fascinating to watch."

This means there can be big things in store for Cami in further installments of Landman if they happen. As for Billy Bob Thornton’s Tommy, Monty’s death puts him in an extremely crucial position as he has to handle everything now. Given how it was he who dealt with the day-to-day operations of the M-Tex oil company, he now has to deal with a lot more in Monty’s absence.

He is very likely to abide by what Cami says about her plans regarding the company’s future and continue to make the best use of his experience and expertise in the oil industry while also trying to build a good life for himself.

Landman can be streamed on Paramount+.
