What is Stranger Things about?

The fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana, is the focal point of the show, which is set in the 1980s. In the show’s debut season, the disappearance of Will Byers led to a widespread investigation in and around the town of Hawkins. Several strange occurrences follow Will’s disappearance which haunts the townspeople. Eventually, the existence of another realm is revealed which is known as the Upside Down, a mirror image of Hawkins, with only the difference of having itself inhabited by unknown evil forces. The Upside Down was unintentionally opened in the human experimentation lab near Hawkins.

Later in season 4, it is confirmed that Eleven while battling Vecna, the main villain of the story, opened or certainly created this realm of Upside Down using her psychic abilities to try to stop Vecna. Unfortunately, it only started the state of the things that began haunting the town of Hawkins.
