The show follows the love story of a rich South Korean businesswoman, Yoon Se-ri, and a North Korean army officer, Ri Jeong-hyeok. Crash Landing On You revolves around Yoon Se-ri, a chaebol heiress and successful businesswoman who owns Seri's Choice. She is distant from her family as her siblings don’t like her, and her mother prefers her brothers over her because Yoon reminds her of her husband's affair. Her father decides to hand over his business to her, as she is the most capable of his kids, according to him. Se-ri doesn’t allow anyone to stay close to her, which leads to short-lived relationships.


One day, she decides to go paragliding, but due to bad weather conditions, she crosses the border and ends up in North Korea. She meets Ri Jeong-hyeok there who ends up providing her safety and shelter. She stays in his home until he finds a way to get her out of the country without anyone discovering her identity. During her time there, she learns about the culture and people of North Korea and forms bonds with his subordinates and neighbors. Things got complicated when Yoon Se-ri and Ri Jeong-hook developed feelings for each other.

Crash Landing On You has a happy ending. In the last few episodes, Ri Jeong-hyeok comes to South Korea to protect Yoon Se-ri, as Cheol-gang escapes from prison and comes to South Korea to take revenge on her. His subordinates follow him to South Korea to help him in protecting Se-ri. Things get serious as Se-ri gets severely injured and falls into a coma because of Cheol-jeong.


The National Intelligence Service investigates the case and Ri Jeong-hyeok and his subordinates get arrested. Eventually, he was ordered to be sent back to North Korea. It was one of the most emotional scenes of the show when she ran to him as he was crossing the border. When he returns to his country, both of them continue with their lives but miss each other. In the end, when she goes on her yearly Switzerland trip, she reunites with Ri Jeong-hyeok.
