Disclaimer: This article contains spoilers for the finale episode of Territory!
If you've been looking for a miniseries that explores the intense power struggles and challenges of owning the biggest cattle ranch in a tough American environment, then Netflix's Territory is for you. Set in the Australian Outback, the series focuses on the Lawson family and its declining control over their cattle station.
Territory has only six episodes, which is enough to capture the central conflict and the consequences of not having a direct heir. The series is commended for blending family drama and a savage succession war. However, one thing that has fans wondering, is what was in the Lawson family safe box.
In Territory episode 6, which serves as the finale of the series, Rich held Marshall and Colin at gunpoint, demanding to open the Lawson family safe box. As he opens the larger safe, Rich discovers $35,000 in cash and $20,000 worth of jewelry and valuables.
However, there's also a smaller safe that Rich couldn't open. Interestingly, the finale didn't reveal what's inside the smaller Lawson family safe box, hinting that it contains family secrets. Read more to explore what happened during the confrontation between Rich and Marshall.
Exploring what was inside the Lawson family safe box in Netflix's Territory
Netflix released Territory on October 24, 2024, and the series has already reached the top TV shows on the streamer. Thanks to Greg McLean for leaving no stone unturned in directing an appealing power struggle, betrayal, and changing family dynamics in the outback of Australia.
The action-packed finale also featured the Lawson family safe box, highlighting their wealth and power. When Rich held Marshall and Colin, he first injured Marshall with a pointed knife, forcing Colin to reveal where the keys to the safe were.
Rich takes no time in opening the safe and finds a whopping amount the cash and jewelry that belonged to Colin's mother. However, Rich noticed the smaller safe and held Colin at gunpoint to reveal to code.
He initially denied it, but Rich hit Marshall's hand, leaving him with no choice but to open it. Marshall opened the smaller safe but immediately closed it, saying "You're gonna have to kill us" if he wanted to know what was inside the smaller Lason family safe.
Colin manages to grab Rich and Marshall then kills him, preserving the hidden secret about the Lawson family. This way, the contents inside the smaller safe remain a mystery, but if there's a season 2, fans might learn what was inside the safe.
Did Netflix renew Territory for a season 2?
Despite notable reviews for the series, Netflix hasn't greenlit Territory for a season 2, at least for now. Considering the finale, there's a strong possibility that the series will return for another chapter.
The series ended with the Lawson family's patriarch Colin handing over control of the Marianne Station to Emily Lawson and her husband. However, the couple is still grieving over the loss of their daughter, making it hard for them to take on the biggest responsibility.
Initially, Colin planned to hand over the control to his grandson Marshall, but the young man didn't want to become like his grandfather. His denial led Emily to take over the control, and it might look like she's in full control but there are still ongoing threats.
Most notably, Sandra promised that she would soon return to settle her score with the Lawsons. Additionally, there's a dark secret behind Daniel's death, which makes room for Territory Season 2. A new season could see Emily as an antihero who could be at war with Colin.
Another big question that hasn't been answered in Territory is about what Marshall discovered inside Colin's smaller safe. It could be something to help in taking down Colin or help Marshall regain power as the heir.
