While the first episode of What If...? Season 3 feels like a nod to Japanese pop culture, the second one looks to 1960s Hollywood. On this earth, Agatha is an actress in Hollywood. However, the witch has a secret plan involving the Celestial Tiamut, buried deep inside the Earth, Kingo, and Arishem. The synopsis for this What If...? episode reads:
"Hollywood film star Agatha Harkness has a new co-star in Howard Stark's first production."
What If...? Season 3 Episode 2 Explained:
Instead of the usual What If...? narration by The Watcher, this one has him introducing the celestials. He explains that the Agatha of this Earth has discovered Tiamut and plans to siphon off its power to fight Arishem to save the Earth. The spell involves a lot of set-up on a large scale, turning her to Hollywood while keeping her witch power a secret.
Agatha is shooting for a major cosmic motion picture directed by Howard Stark. However, she breaks character and says that the scene isn't working and needs to be rewritten to add the "it" factor. 2nd AD Jarvis (James D'Arcy returning from Agent Carter and Endgame) tells her that she rewrote it five times already. Howard, impressed with Agatha, ignores Jarvis.
Agatha convinces Howard to cast the popular Bollywood actor from India, Kingo, in this movie. This is Kingo's second appearance and first appearance in animated form in What If...? Kumail Nanjiani returns as Kingo, reprising his role from the 2021 movie The Eternals. He is looking forward to meeting Agatha as it is implied that he knows of her secret, and likewise, she is aware of his.
Howard then preps the set to shoot the glamorous musical number that involves a dance-off between the two stars from opposite sides of the globe. Kingo is dancing to an anachronistic Hindi song, while Agatha is dancing to an era-appropriate American foottapper. Despite Kingo's best efforts to beat Agatha with his superpowers, she comes out on top in this scene.
Howard and the crew leave the set, leaving Agatha and Kingo alone. Kingo accuses Agatha of murdering his fellow Eternals, but she assures that they are alive. She needs the power of all the Eternals to absorb Tiamut's power and convinces Kingo to let her do so in exchange for a three-picture deal and releasing his friends. As that happens, Agatha and Kingo are taken to Arishem.
Angered by Kingo's treachery, Arishem reveals to the Eternal and Agatha that he is coming to destroy the Earth. This action forces the witch and Kingo to enact the ritual immediately. They meet Howard to discuss shooting the scene immediately. He agrees to film the scene and reveals that he knows about Agatha's witchy secret and learns about Kingo's cosmic origin.
Agatha, Kingo, and the crew prepare the rituals, and she manages to absorb Kingo and Tiamut's powers as Howard films the events on a camera. After getting the power, Agatha transforms into a giant violet celestial version of herself and fights Arishem. Initially, it looks like Arishem has the upper hand, but it is all a trick, and Agatha siphons off his power, killing him.
However, now the even more powerful celestial Agatha reveals that her hero act was a ruse, and she wants to remake the world as she feels fit. But, Kingo manages to get through to her and convinces her to partner up with him by starring together in movies.
As they attend the premiere of their current movie, Kingo tells Agatha about other Eternals worrying about numerous other celestials. But she retorts that she isn't worried about the other celestials coming for Earth. Then, at the end of this What If...? episode, The Watcher is narrating, and three other celestials emerge behind him.
The first two episodes of What If...? Season 3 and the previous seasons are available for streaming at Disney+. Episode 3 of the show will be out on 24th December 2024.
