2024 was a great year for X-Men fans as they were blown away by X-Men'97, which ran for ten episodes. Then What If...? Season 3 had a variant of Storm holding the Mjölnir, and Deadpool & Wolverine provided an awesome theatrical experience. Both What If...? and Deadpool and Wolverine gave us "the Cavillrine", while the animated series had a Thanos with Wolverine's metal claws.

Wolverine variants in What If...? and Deadpool & Wolverine explained

In the closing moments of What If...? Season 3 finale "What If... What If?" there is a montage that shows familiar Marvel characters with a twist. For example, Riri Williams is The Punisher, Moon Knight is a vampire hunter, and there is Thanos, who has Wolverine's metal claws. This Thanos has the mask and wiring of Weapon X over his head. This is just a still image, so we don't know his story yet.

Much like Jason Momoa as Lobo, another long-time fan casting for a while has been Superman actor Henry Cavill as the Wolverine. This fan-casting was affectionately dubbed "Cavillrine" by the internet. However, the makers of Deadpool & Wolverine made this a reality, as Cavill makes an appearance as the metal-clawed mutant.

His cameo appears in the part of a montage of Deadpool trying to find a variant of Wolverine to serve as an anchor being for his universe. In that montage, we come across several variants of Wolverine across the multiverse. One of these variants is seen from the back. Wade remarks that from behind this Wolverine looks familiar, making the latter turn, revealing Henry Cavill.

Deadpool, excited, opines that Cavill as Wolverine "feels right" and then proceeds to take a swipe at a certain studio (DC unnamed) down the street for mistreating the actor. However, Cavillrine throws Deadpool out and instead of a wall, Wade moves to another reality, ending at the movie's version of Hugh Jackman's Wolverine.

With Thanos Weapon X in What If...? and Cavillrine in Deadpool & Wolverine, Marvel has introduced exciting versions of Wolverine that have the potential to replace Hugh Jackman's iconic version. However, it remains to be seen if Marvel will go ahead and replace Jackman as rumors circulate that Jackman may return either in a follow-up for Deadpool & Wolverine or Avengers movies, or both.

Hugh Jackman's history with Wolverine explored

The first time we saw Hugh Jackman as Wolverine was in 2000's X-Men. Like in typical comic book fan fashion, the reaction to Jackman's casting was received with an uproar. It remained like that for a while because people preferred the actor who was initially supposed to play the clawed mutant, Dougray Scott. However, he had to give up the role because of his role in Mission Impossible II.

But, Jackman won fans over with performance and that love remained even when the movies weren't liked. Finally, in 2017, Jackman bid farewell to this particular version of Wolverine with the movie Logan, which received popular and critical acclaim. It was meant to serve Hugh Jackman's swan song as the character but decided to put the claws back on. But his return makes one thing difficult.

According to reports, replacing Hugh is a tough job for Marvel as he is iconic as the character. That's why it would be exciting if Marvel goes ahead with the alternatives mentioned above. The Cavillrine is a safe bet that will win over the fans. However, Cavill does not have the best time at the movies currently. The other, Thanos Weapon X from What If...? is a riskier alternative, but also has the potential to blow up.

What do you want? Do you want the risky alternative from What If...? or the fan-favorite Cavillrine? Or do you want Hugh Jackman back till as Deadpool put it "till he is 90"?
