In the episode, Holes are Bad, Flower is a 1960s hippie ghost. She unexpectedly vanishes from the Woodstone mansion. The other ghosts think she’s finally been “sucked off” (their term for moving on to the afterlife).
But it turns out she’s actually stuck at the bottom of a well. And, Sam and Jay are away for the weekend. So, the ghosts are on their own. They desperately try to save Flower from being trapped in the well forever.
Just then a contractor arrives to fill it with concrete. This urgent situation pushes Hetty to share something she’s kept hidden for over a century.

Hetty reveals that her life came to an end in 1895 under tragic circumstances. After her husband Elias disappeared, she was left entangled in legal trouble and financial ruin due to his shady business practices. Hetty found herself in a hopeless situation.
She had broken child labor laws and faced serious legal consequences. All of this would ultimately ruin her son Thomas’ future and destroy the family’s fortune. In her despair, she decided to take her own life by strangling herself with a telephone cord in the mansion’s library.
This adds a layer of depth to Hetty’s character. It shows that her seemingly unshakeable confidence masks years of regret and sorrow. It also brings out a softer, more vulnerable side to Hetty as she shares this painful memory with the other ghosts. With this, she hopes to prevent Flower from experiencing the same loneliness she felt.
Why did Hetty take her own life?
Hetty’s choice to take her own life was made out of love and desperation. She wanted to protect her son Thomas from the consequences of her and Elias’s actions. Hetty believed that if she died, her son could continue his life without the stain of her crimes.
In her heart, she thought it was the best way to protect her family’s name. She also thought that it would ensure that her son would inherit the Woodstone fortune.
However, her decision came with a heavy price. In trying to save her son’s future, she robbed him of his mother. And that’s her ultimate regret. It left Thomas feeling abandoned.

Hetty’s story behind her death is one of the saddest in Ghosts
Each ghost on the property has a backstory. Most of them have a humorous twist. Flower, for instance, died while trying to hug a bear. Isaac Higgintoot succumbed to dysentery. It’s humorously ironic given his lack of regard for hygiene.
But Hetty’s death stands out as one of the saddest in the series. It was all about sacrifice, regret, and loneliness. She often butts heads with the other ghosts, but now it is known that she actually values their friendship. In fact, she has even found a kind of family in them.
This episode marks a turning point for Hetty. In the earlier seasons, she was mostly focused on maintaining her dignity and hiding her flaws. But as we learn more about her past, we see a vulnerable side that makes her more relatable.
Hetty’s willingness to share her story shows that she’s grown close to the other ghosts. She doesn’t want them to feel alone like she once did.
