The 2025 One Chicago crossover episode had everyone's heart racing with one of the most stunning moments the series has ever seen. Sergeant Trudy Platt Chicago P.D. was shot several times in the back. Played by Amy Morton, Platt's strength and resilience were put to the test as she hovered between life and death, her heart stopping on the OT table.
Despite the dire situation, the dedicated Chicago Med staff, featuring Dr. Mitch Ripley and Dr. Caitlin Lenox, worked tirelessly to save her life. Some viewers were surprised by her recovery, but showrunner Gwen Sigan put their minds at ease by confirming that Platt is still an essential piece of the One Chicago puzzle—for the time being, anyway.
This heart-wrenching episode not only affected Trudy Platt profoundly but also had a significant impact on the entire Chicago P.D. squad.
The One Chicago crossover almost killed Trudy Platt
The One Chicago crossover had nail-biting moments happening in Chicago Med, Chicago Fire, and Chicago P.D. Trudy Platt's nightmare unfolded as she was looking into a gas explosion, only to realize it was a premeditated act of arson. She ended up chasing some suspects into a basement and was suddenly shot multiple times in the back, leaving her seriously injured and unable to do anything but make a quick call for help before passing out, as per One Chicago Center.
Her fight for life was incredibly tough. Once at Chicago Med, the doctors faced a tough challenge: Platt's body was pushing back against the blood transfusions, which made it almost unbearable to keep her stable. It got so dire that Mouch, her husband, had to tell Hank Voight that she had flatlined a few times on the operating table. The scenes with Mouch were just heartbreaking, as he thought he was losing her.
Dr. Ripley and Dr. Lenox pulled off a medical miracle to get her heart going again and keep her alive. By the time the crossover event finished, Trudy Platt was thankfully on the road to recovery but wasn't out of the woods yet.
What’s next for Trudy Platt on Chicago P.D.?
Although Trudy Platt made it through, her close call with death is sure to send waves through the One Chicago world. The one who pulled the trigger was Bates, played by Jennifer Regan, and she used to be a police officer like Platt. They were even tight friends, so you can imagine how this turns everything upside down. Not just for Platt, but for all her Chicago P.D. buddies.
They are all shaken up and on a mission to make things right. Voight makes sure Bates gets what's coming to her. But even though the bad guy's caught, Platt's still got a mountain of emotional baggage to deal with.
The showrunner, Gwen Sigan, dropped hints about what's next for Platt. She talked to NBC and said:
“It’s very emotional. It’s definitely high-stakes. [Fans will] have to watch to really find out what happens with her story.”
It sounds like this might change Trudy Platt in a big way, but for now, we can't say for sure if it means she is leaving the show. The folks who run Chicago Med, where Platt sometimes pops up, also chime in. One of them, Allen Macdonald, says:
“Her life is on the line, and they really have to work together to hopefully figure that out in time.”
One Chicago shows are known for using these moments to build their characters instead of saying goodbye to them. Like when they had us guessing about Detective Kevin Atwater, played by LaRoyce Hawkins. He stuck around.
