The Lord of The Rings: The Rings of Power explores the events preceding the formation of the three rings of power. Apart from many fantasy creatures including elves, wizards, and dragons, viewers of the fantasy series have an affinity for one particular group of creatures: the enigmatic Entwives.

Entwives are primarily whimsical beings who thrive in an abundant forest and are in ways its guardians. Before relocating across the river Anduin, they gleefully lived together with the rest of the Ents.

The role of Entwives might not be as grand as the Ents who guard the forest, but they do nurture gardens, miniature shrubs, and all things petite - all crucial for the persistence of life.

The episode titled Eldest, from season 2 of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, saw the emergence of Ents and Entwives. The trio Arondir, Isildur, and Estrid embark on a tumultuous quest to locate Theo while learning to work together as a team.

They were rather prepared to take on any challenge, however, they weren’t exactly prepared to encounter Ents who’ve been abducting humans: Winterbloom (an Entwive) and Snaggleroot (an Ent).

Winterbloom’s appearance in the episode is perplexing since her kind hasn’t made a single appearance since season 1 of the series, and neither has there been a mention since the movies ended. Season 2 of the Prime Video series has left viewers concerned and bewildered about the fate and nature of the Entwives.

The fate of the Entwives after The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power

The fate of the Entwives was never confirmed by Tolkien. However, Treebeard did claim that the creatures were still alive even though there were several implications of their death as an aftermath of the Last Alliance.

In that movie, the Ents and the Entwives rally against dark forces and Sauron to end his cruelty. While there was a resounding victory, there was also chaos for the Entwives.

The books mention the Brown Lands to have been the former dwelling spot of the Entwives - a barren land without any sign of life. That was a result of the war, Treebeard claims.

While some theories suggest they’ve been wiped out, others suggest they’ve gone far East. Their fate is oblivious and unconfirmed even in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power series.

The Entwives’ separation from the Ents

Per Collider, the Entwives and Ents were known to have a rather close bond and lived in harmony. The franchise depicts them as peaceful beings who made a great team and watched over the lands together. Sadly, they weren’t meant to be.

The Entwives moved to a habitat amid Misty Mountains and Mirkwood across the Anduin River. Despite their strong affinity and the Ents attempting weekly visits to their abode, their relationship fell through. The Entwives grew physically different, emotionally distinct, and had nothing in common. This led to a permanent severance of their bond.

Seasons 1 and 2 of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power are available to stream on Prime Video.
