Exploring Dr. Evelyn Vogel's character in Dexter
Dr. Evelyn Vogel was an important character in Dexter's life, and she became an important advisor when the Miami Police Department was searching for a serial killer called The Brain Surgeon.
When she is called in to assist with the investigation, she sees Dexter in the room and reveals the role she played in his formative years as a serial killer, of which he is unaware. She shows him DVDs where Harry is discussing his adoptive son's psychopathic tendencies and how he is unable to control them.
She explained how Harry knew her from her work with young psychopaths and asked for her help to tame Dexter, and she came up with Harry's Code, which became a guide for him and helped him throughout his life.
While Dexter was not ready to accept any of it, she called herself his 'Spiritual Mother' and maybe felt a connection with him because she had already lost both her sons.
Together, Dexter and Vogel began the search for the Brain Surgeon killer, who had his anterior insular cortex part of the brain hollowed out, which is responsible for empathy.
After many dead-ends, Dexter finds out that the killer is related to Evelyn when he matches their DNA. He later found out that Daniel faked his death and was committing all these murders under his new identity of Oliver Saxon.
Dr. Evelyn Vogel was killed by her son in Dexter
Dexter's investigation was right, and the man Miami Police were after in the killings was Evelyn's son Daniel, who had faked his death. After Evelyn comes to know that her son is alive, she begs Dexter not to kill him, but he is a menace to society.
In Season 8 Episode 10, titled Goodbye Miami, Saxon takes his mother to the Rendall Psychiatric Hospital, which he had decorated like the mental facility his mother sent him. He told her about all the killings he did on the lab table, and he planned each of his killings.
On Dexter's persuasion, Evelyn reluctantly agrees to capture Saxon, where he will take him to a secluded place and capture him. But Saxon notices his mother's nervousness while they are having tea at her house and comes to know about her plan to capture him.
While Dexter arrives at Vogel's house, Saxon tells that her mother chose the wrong son once again and slit her throat and fled away. Dexter tries to help her, but she bleeds out on the floor and dies.
