Survival in Apple TV's Silo is a big task, and each new episode brings the possibility of a new character dying. Unaware of the outside environment, the residents live inside their respective bunkers and have misplaced notions of the outside world in Season 1.
While it was only at the end of Season 1 that Juliette stepped out to realize the truth about their world, the seeds for the rebellion were sowed in previous episodes.
Episode 3 saw the murder of Mayor Ruth Jahns, which upset Deputy Marnes (Will Patton) as the two had just expressed their feelings for one another. Marnes was working under Holston Becker in the Sheriff's Department and was investigating possible corruption with Jahn in their bunkers.
Deputy Marnes was killed by Douglas Trumbull, a Judicial agent in Silo Season 1 Episode 4 as he was about to expose the Judicial's secrets and uncover the corruption inside the bunkers.
More on Deputy Marnes' death in Silo in our story.
Deputy Marnes was killed by a Judicial agent in Silo Season 1
Deputy Marnes is seen investigating George's murder by traveling through the lower levels of the bunker. After his wife's death, Sherrif Holston does not want to continue and nominates Juliette as his successor.
While Marnes is unhappy with this decision, he reckons Holston is not thinking right while grieving. Tragedy struck when Mayor Ruth dies in Episode 3, and Marnes suspects that she has been murdered. She died by poisoning after drinking from Marnes' flask, which meant that the poison was supposed to kill him.
He makes a deal with Julieete to help her investigate George's murder if she helps him find Ruth's killer. Before they can investigate anything, Marnes is killed in his apartment one night when he is drunk and grieving Ruth. His skull was caved in by the butt of his shotgun by a Judicial agent called Doughlas Trumbull as Marnes was becoming a threat to the hierarchy within the Silo.
His death was officially deemed as a heart issue for roaming the levels of the bunkers at his age.
