The Dragon Prince is one of the longest-running animated shows on Netflix. The fantasy series is set in the magical land of Xadia, where a war has been going on between the humans, the dragons, and the elves for a thousand years.
Three kids from opposite sides then take it upon themselves to go on a mission and attempt to put an end to the war. However, the trio has to face several threats along the way. In the second season finale, the kids Callum and Rayla, along with the young dragon Azymondias, encounter the mystic beast Sol Regem.
Sol Regem is the former Dragon King, who reigned over Xadia for 200 years. Now blinded, he has extreme hatred toward humans. However, Sol Regem dies in The Dragon Prince season 6 while trying to swallow Sunfire Elf Pharos and choking on his remains.

Sol Regem dies in The Dragon Prince by choking on Pharos' dead body
Sol Regem is a powerful and ancient dragon in The Dragon Prince, who is also known as the Archdragon of the Sun. He was once the King of Dragons and was a symbol of strength and beauty. However, his life took a dark turn when he is blinded by Ziard, a human mage who used dark magic to attack him.
The injury left Sol Regem bitter, and he began to despise humans, considering them as lesser beings unworthy of magic. Over time, his anger makes him a symbol of vengeance rather than strength or hope. He lives in exile while dealing with the mysterious death of his mate, Aithne Solaire.
In The Dragon Prince season 6 episode 8, Sol Regem becomes a major threat when he attacks Katolis. As the citizens begin to evacuate, former dark mage Viren sacrifices himself to shield people from the dragon’s flames. He performs a spell that requires his life and seeks redemption for his past deeds.
However, Sol Regem suffers severe injuries from the kingdom’s counterattacks. He suffers fatal wounds, after which Aaravos, the Startouch Elf known for his manipulative behavior, appears in front of him.
He reveals a dark truth to Sol Regem, that he had accidentally killed Aithne himself, by burying her alive in a fit of rage. This leaves Sol Regem enraged and heartbroken. He begins to devour Pharos, one of Aaravos’s allies but chokes and dies in the process. His death marks the fall of a once-great dragon.
The chain of events in The Dragon Prince that lead to Sol Regem’s death
Sol Regem’s death in The Dragon Prince is the result of a chain of events that begins with the demise of his mate, Aithne Solaire. While he struggles with the question of who killed his beloved, it is later revealed that he was himself responsible for her death.
At the same time, Prince Karim’s rebellion against his sister, Queen Janai of the Sunfire Elves also plays a pivotal role in Sol Regem’s tragic end. Karim tricks Sol Regem by offering him the Sun Seed, saying it will heal his wings and make him strong again. But the dragon wants more than that: he wants his eyesight back.
Blinded by his hatred for humans, he attacks Katolis and sets the kingdom on fire. While the knight Soren leads the evacuation of people, Viren sacrifices his life to save the kingdom. Sol Regem then has to retreat while being injured.
The dragon is already dying due to his wounds, and Aaravos’ revelation about Aithne’s death only acts as a catalyst. Sol Regem's rage takes over him once again as he tries to devour Pharos’ body, but ends up killing himself.
The Dragon Prince seasons 1 to 7 are streaming on Netflix.
