Blue Bloods is a police procedural that first aired in September 2010, on CBS. It focuses on the members of the Reagan family.
The by-the-book cop, Sid Gormley, is played by Robert Clohessy. He is one of the show’s most beloved and complex characters. If you’ve been tuning in, you know Sid isn’t just any NYPD lieutenant.
He’s an important part of Commissioner Frank Reagan’s trusted inner circle. He has been a regular since Season 1 which makes him a familiar face for fans who’ve followed the Reagan family’s law enforcement saga.
His gruff demeanor and no-nonsense approach have made him a fan favorite. Sid had faced some serious challenges not just professionally, but also personally. These struggles sparked concern among fans and some even wondered if Sid was leaving Blue Bloods.
Let’s explore the character and his fate.
Lieutenant Sidney "Sid" Gormley in Blue Bloods
Sid Gormley started as a detective sergeant, supervising Danny Reagan (Donnie Wahlberg) back in the 54th Precinct. Their dynamic was hilarious. Sid’s old-school ways were clashing with Danny’s brash attitude.
But in Season 5, Sid got a major career upgrade. He became Special Assistant to Commissioner Frank Reagan (Tom Selleck). This got him a spot in the commissioner’s inner circle alongside Garrett Moore and Abigail Baker.
Off-duty, Sid is a family man with a family history of service. He lives in New Hyde Park with his wife, Sheila, and their kids. He’s also a proud NYU grad and a military veteran. His trademarks are his tough-as-nails attitude and dedication to the job.

Sid’s tough times
Sid’s usually rock-solid but certain seasons have shown cracks in his armor. In Season 11, viewers saw a more vulnerable side of him. Sid struggled with depression after losing his longtime police partner.
Unable to attend the funeral or say goodbye, the loss hit him hard. This emotional weight became evident in the episode For Whom The Bell Tolls. He resisted therapy and insisted that he could handle things on his own. This classic tough-guy move only made things worse.
Later, in Guardian Angels, Sid faced another crisis. Old complaints about excessive force resurfaced which was a professional blow. Fans wondered if Sid was nearing his breaking point.
However, Sid might have taken some time off to grieve and regroup, but he was still very much part of the Blue Bloods squad.
Robert Clohessy’s character remains a pivotal part of Frank Reagan’s team.
Sid was originally supposed to be a one-off character but Clohessy’s chemistry with the cast made him become a series regular!
