Sheriff Donnie Haskell was a law enforcement officer associated with John Dutton ever since the first season of Yellowstone. Sheriff Donnie Haskell was tragically killed during a botched diner hold-up during the fourth season of Yellowstone. Despite being a law enforcement officer, Sheriff Donnie Haskell tried his best to keep John Dutton and the Dutton family away from the radar of the law. He had his own weaknesses and was a gambling addict.

Malcolm Beck and Teal Beck, also known as the infamous Beck brothers on Yellowstone, were able to use Donnie Haskell's gambling addiction and subsequent gambling debts to control and manipulate him into harming the Duttons. Haskell was also a family man and had a daughter and grandchildren. At the time of his death, his last wish was to speak to his daughter and say his final goodbye.

Yellowstone recently came to a raging end with the conclusion of its fifth season. John Dutton, played by Kevin Costner, had already been killed off in the first episode of the final season, and the last installment from Taylor Sheridan saw the remaining characters trying their best to deal with the fallout.

Here's everything we know about Sheriff Donnie Haskell and his role on Yellowstone.

Sheriff Donnie Haskell's tragic death on Yellowstone season 4

During the latter half of the fourth season of the Paramount show, Donnie Haskell was waiting for John Dutton at a local diner. They were supposed to meet to discuss the role of Terrell Riggins as a threat to the Dutton family. As soon as John and Rip showed up to the diner, they sensed that something was off.

Everyone inside the diner seemed to be looking straight ahead, but none of them were eating their food. The two of them backed up their car and drove around to the back of the restaurant to probe deeper.

The perpetrators of the holdup had the patrons of the diner as hostages and were seemingly waiting for the Duttons to show. Sensing an opportunity, Haskell reached for his pistol hidden in his boot as the Dutton duo stormed in shooting bullets. In the crossfire, Haskell was fatally wounded and shot in the chest.

Haskell knew that his end was near and therefore sought to make a last phone call, to his daughter. He passed away in the middle of the call and John Dutton eventually broke the tragic news of his passing to his daughter.

What has Hugh Dillon been up to since leaving Yellowstone?

Actor Hugh Dillon, who portrayed the character of Sheriff Donnie Haskell, went on with other projects following the death of his character. He teamed up once again with Taylor Sheridan and donned the hats of executive producer and actor on Mayor of Kingstown. In an interview with TV Insider, he revealed:

"I remember Taylor saying, 'You need to produce. I need you to learn how to do this. I want you to come and finish work on Yellowstone, but you're going on to Mayor (of Kingstown). I've written you an honorable death, and you need to nail this scene, and Kevin's coming in, and here's what's happening, It was just a beautifully written scene, like everything he writes, and it was just an honor to do it. He wrote this heart-wrenching tear-jerker of a death scene. And as an actor, that is the best death scene I've ever been a part of."
