SEAL Team Season 5 Episode 3 is one of the most influential episodes of the show, as we see the Bravo Team in a flashback to the fatal attacks of 9/11 on the World Trade Center. The episode focuses on the events leading up to 9/11 that impacted everyone's lives on the Bravo Team.
While everyone's story was touching and showed what that disastrous event took away from them, we get a glimpse into the life of a young Ray Perry as he reminisces about his father, who he lost in the 9/11 at the WTC.
Ray Perry is a highly respected officer on the Navy SEAL Team and a best friend to Jason. This flashback highlights what his driving force was all those years ago when he joined the team.
More on Ray's father in the SEAL Team in our story.
What happened to Ray's father on the SEAL Team?
Through a flashback in Season 5 Episode 3, titled Nine-Ten, the Bravo team members reflect on the incidents of 9/11, which changed each of their lives forever.
Ray's father was a firefighter, and during the flashback, Ray is seen just out of college and seems to be on a destructive path. His father bails him out of the police station after he fails a breathalyzer test. While his father helped and got him out, he advised Ray to get his life together and start having a goal in life.
Then we see his father leaving for work and telling him that as a child, his own father used to beat him. Ray takes this as a threat and confronts his father.
He was relieved that he was called to bail his son out of the police station and feared that one day, he would get a similar call from the morgue and would not be able to do anything about it. He said that he was not angry anymore but just disappointed and left for work.
The flashbacks then cut to the rubble after 9/11, where a young Ray is trying to get past the cops to find his father.
In the present, Ray visits the memorial dedicated to 9/11 casualties, where we see his father's name.
What does the flashback mean for Ray in the SEAL Team?
The flashback gives a glimpse into Ray's life before he joined the SEAL Team, and it contrasts very much with the character we see on the show in the present. While nothing about his relationship with his father is dwelled further upon, one can only think that his father's death impacted him in such a way that he started taking his life seriously.
Maybe his father's last words of his disappointment towards him were the guiding force that motivated him to join the Navy SEAL Team. He was introduced as the Chief Warrant Officer 2 of Bravo Team, who was further appointed as OIC (Officer In Charge) of Bravo Team Callsign Mako 1.
He is a highly professional and disciplined officer in his team, fit for every leadership role he is given.
