Dr. Noah Sexton was a medical student and later a General Surgery Resident at Gaffney Chicago Medical Center. He was best known as April Sexton's younger brother in Chicago Med. Although he wasn’t a main character, he appeared frequently, making him a familiar face to the audience. However, his sudden departure left fans wondering what really happened to him.
Noah’s journey on the show was filled with struggles, difficult choices, and family expectations. While his story was not as central as his sister’s, it had its fair share of emotional highs and lows. This article will explore Noah’s time on Chicago Med, the challenges he faced, and what ultimately led to his exit.
Noah Sexton, played by Roland Buck III, was introduced as a young medical student with big dreams. Unlike his sister April, who was naturally talented in her profession, Noah struggled to meet the expectations set by his parents. His family believed he had great potential, but he found it difficult to keep up with the demands of medical school.
Noah’s challenges in the medical field
Even after becoming a resident, Noah faced numerous challenges in the Emergency Department (ED). His lack of experience often put him in difficult situations.
Noah had April by his side, and she always supported him, sometimes even at the cost of her own personal and professional life. In Season 1, April canceled a date with Chicago Fire’s Kelly Severide just to help Noah study for an important exam.
She continued to guide him throughout his journey, ensuring he didn’t fall behind. Thanks to her efforts and his determination, Noah eventually improved and secured a residency at Gaffney Chicago Medical Center.
In one instance, he took credit for ordering a crucial lab test when, in reality, it was Dr. Sarah Reese’s work. When confronted, he admitted he only did it because he wanted to impress Dr. Ethan Choi. This moment highlighted his insecurity and his need for validation.
Noah shared a strong bond with April, which made him very observant of her emotions. In Season 5, he was the first to notice the romantic tension between April and Dr. Crockett Marcel. He also worked alongside April on medical cases, such as when they saved a patient by performing a life-saving procedure while the patient was jogging on a treadmill.
The incident that changed everything
Noah’s career took a dramatic turn in Season 6, Episode 5 ("When Your Heart Rules Your Head"). He was involved in a controversial case that ultimately cost him his job. The case involved a doctor who had helped his wife end her life due to a painful illness. After his wife’s passing, the doctor attempted to take his own life as well but was found and brought to the hospital before he could die.
Noah saw the doctor’s actions as an act of mercy rather than a crime. Believing he was doing the right thing, Noah left a syringe filled with lidocaine near the patient, making it easy for him to take his own life.
When the patient later coded, Dr. Ethan Choi figured out what had happened. April, desperate to protect her brother, begged Dr. Choi not to report him to the authorities.
Although Dr. Choi agreed not to involve the police, he had no choice but to fire Noah for negligence. However, instead of revoking his medical license, he allowed him to leave and find a residency somewhere else. This marked Noah’s exit from Chicago Med, and he was not seen on the show for a long time.
After being fired from Gaffney, Noah disappeared from the show. Unlike some other characters who had dramatic exits, his departure was relatively quiet. He was not killed off, nor was there much information about where he went next.
Fans speculated that he could be continuing his medical career elsewhere or possibly reconnecting with Sarah Reese, another character who had also left the show. His absence remained a mystery for a while, leaving the door open for a possible return.
Noah’s brief return
Noah surprised fans when he made a brief return in Season 8, Episode 9 ("This Could Be the Start of Something New").
He came back to Chicago for his sister April’s wedding to Dr. Ethan Choi. Though he had little screen time, he was shown standing as one of Ethan’s groomsmen. He was also seen happily celebrating the couple’s union and throwing rice at them as they left.
This appearance was a nostalgic moment for fans, as it confirmed that Noah was still part of April’s life despite his departure from the hospital. However, his return was short-lived, and he was not seen again after the wedding.
Since Noah was never killed off, there is always a chance that he could return to Chicago Med. The show has brought back old characters before, so it’s possible that Noah might come back for a future storyline.
He could be working in another hospital, gaining more experience, and perhaps even redeeming himself after the controversial assisted suicide case. With April still being a strong presence in the show, Noah’s return could bring interesting developments to her storyline as well.
For now, though, his story seems to be over, but fans of Chicago Med know that anything can happen.
