Oscar-winning actor Robert De Niro's gripping political thriller Zero Day is out on Netflix, which delves into the aftermath of a catastrophic cyberattack on the United States. At the center of the series is De Niro's former U.S. President George Mullen, forced out of retirement to investigate the attack.

As Mullen kicks off with the investigation, he uncovers a shocking conspiracy that goes beyond mere cyberterrorism. It does not only involve renowned political figures and tech billionaires but even his family.

Following a huge cyber attack, George Mullen agrees to lead the Zero Day Commission to hunt down the culprits. Shockingly, Mullen's beloved daughter Alex emerges as one of the key figures involved in the attack, leaving the former president in a complex situation.

However, Alex isn't the only child of Mullen as he also had a son named Nick Mullen who died in his teenage. While Zero Day does not dive into his story in depth, it's revealed that Nick Mullen died from a heroin overdose.

The teenager's death plays a significant role in the Netflix series as it not only highlights the Mullen family's trauma but also explains the strained relationship between George and his daughter, Alex.

While the cyberattack in the U.S. is central to Netflix's Zero Day, the series also sheds light on the death of George Mullen's son Nick Mullen. Unlike many, Nick lost his battle with addiction and was found dead in his bedroom when George was serving as the president.

Witnessing his son's lifeless body in his bedroom still haunts the former U.S. president and Zero Day Episode 4 also revealed the meaning behind Who Killed Bambi? playing in his mind. When George entered Nick's room, the song was on in his stereo, and since then it has remained stuck in his subconscious.

While George often refused to believe Nick took his own life, Alex argued that their father prioritized his political career when his children needed him the most. The former president cannot risk losing his other child and that is why he finds it hard to open up about the culprits involved in the attack.

However, George finally decides to reveal the truth by exposing Dreyer and reading Alex’s letter. He was initially scared of losing his daughter but Alex later turned herself in, making it easier for her father.

This way, George's family and his past play a big role in solving the Zero Day attack. Not only this, but he also learned to cope with his son's loss and didn't have to sacrifice his daughter for justice.

In the end, the former U.S. president has ensured a peaceful retirement in his Hudson estate. However, the series didn't clarify if Nick committed suicide or if was it someone's sinister plan.

The series is receiving notable reviews from fans but there's currently no news about a potential Season 2. Netflix has labeled De Niro's show as a limited series, which means the story has possibly been wrapped up in one season.
