Nancy Tegeder is a very focal figure in the true crime series Burden of Guilt, which examines the details of her untimely death in 1971. Married to Jan Sandlin, her life was uncovered with mysterious conditions that continue to raise questions in various people's minds over the years.

Initially ruled a suicide, her case was reopened decades later due to new evidence and public interest, particularly in light of her husband's later conviction for another crime. The series provides a detailed examination of her life, the events leading to her death, and the ongoing implications for her family. It aired on Paramount+ on February 4.

Early life and marriage of Nancy Tegeder

Nancy Tegeder lived in Doraville, Georgia, where she built a life with her husband Jan Sandlin. The couple had a son, Jason, and Nancy, who worked as a dry cleaner clerk. According to friends, she was devoted to her family and satisfied with her life at home.

But beneath the calm exterior lay serious marital discord. According to reports, Nancy was pregnant at the time of her death, which complicated matters. Her relationship with Jan was said to be strained, and some friends claimed that he had subjected her to domestic abuse.

On September 9, 1971, Nancy's family found her wrapped in a sheet with a gunshot wound to her abdomen. The bullet had ricocheted off one of her ribs and pierced her heart, leading to an almost instantaneous death. An autopsy concluded that she died shortly after the injury occurred.

Nearby, the police found a note purportedly written by Nancy indicating that she had committed suicide. The news stunned her family and investigators as well, and even more so since she was pregnant.

Investigation and reopening of the case

Initially, the death of Nancy Tegeder was declared a suicide through the note and lack of evidence showing foul play. However, detectives noted peculiarities surrounding the incident. For example, the gun used in the shooting was found outside the sheet she had been wrapped in, raising suspicions about how she could have shot herself and then arranged herself neatly afterward.

Many years later, as part of the investigation on the death of an infant Matthew Golder, officials reopened the case of Nancy Tegeder. They sought advice from Jason Tegeder who, much against the family's wishes, was willing to take a fresh look at the case of his mother's death.

He also told investigators that he knew on the night his mother died that she was to meet with his father, Jan Sandlin, about their miserable marriage. The reopened case uncovered claims by friends that Jan had been violent towards Nancy and that he may have had reasons to do so due to her pregnancy.

Among the claims, was that Nancy was pregnant with another man's child, which could have led to friction between them. However, there was no tangible evidence to directly implicate Jan in her death.

Continuing impact on family and community

The ripples of the death of Nancy Tegeder extended beyond that tragic day. Her son Jason grew up with an unresolved case, which has haunted him throughout his life. He and other family members have borne the emotional impact of their pain and confusion regarding her death.
